Book Description
Excerpt from Flatbush Dahlias for 1928 This is another medium-sized Dutch variety which by its form and free blooming qualities is deserving a place among the larger novelties. its lovely pink color is similar to the old favorite. Delice. Which we are now discarding, as Rosea Elegans is far more satisfactory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Dahlias, 1928 As for my own Dahlias - and they are the ones I am principally concerned in selling, you know - after going about to the big Fall shows in the East, where I go both to judge and to make newer selections, I return home with the feeling of satisfaction that I grow Dahlias as well as most of those I have seen on exhibition. From my customers scattered throughout the land, I get most enthusiastic reports of their successes, not only in the gardens but also at their competitive Shows. And now I must tell you a joke which does not bring discredit upon my Dahlias. The present President of the Dahlia Society of California gave a Dahlia talk at our State University, last Sum mer. He used a lot of my blooms to illustrate his talk. In a burst of confi dence he said to me: To tell you frankly, Doctor, I saw no better Dahlias than yours out at our Dahlia Show in California, this year. Then, that naive spirit so noticeable amongst the people of Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and California flamed forth with this: But, this year (1927) was not a very good season in California! (all right, Curtis old dear, we are even!) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Alexander's 1928 Dahlias I find Dahlias are particularly adapted for seashore use, and not only do well, but thrive, for the reason of the moisture, and principally the heavy dews which collect during the nights. I also find that many varieties do well in partial shade, producing fully as good flowers as they do in the hot sun, especially for exhibition purposes. Dahlias will grow and do equally well in any kind of soil. I have sand, gravel, heavy and light loam, low land and hills, and find very little difference, as far as the number of flowers is concerned, the only difference being that in sand and gravel they form a short, sturdy, compact plant, and in heavy loam and low land they grow tall and rank, blossoming about a week later than those planted at the same time in sandy soil. Preparation The soil should be thoroughly cultivated; ploughed or spaded 8 to 10 inches deep, well pulverized and thoroughly worked over, thus affording an opportunity for rapid expansion, and making an easy path for the tiny rootlets. To secure exceptional results, have your soil ploughed or spaded in the Fall or as early as practicable in the Spring then just before planting have soil thoroughly ploughed or spaded again. Fertilizer. Fertilization is one of the most important factors, to be successful with Dahlias. We all know that a growing plant, the Dahlia for instance, requires and takes from the soil certain properties; and in order to keep the soil in correct proportion, the materials the Dahlia takes from the soil must be restored. This must be done by fertilization. You can use dressing (either horse, cow, sheep or hen), or chemicals, or any commercial fertilizer rich in nitrogen, potash and phosphoric acid. Fish and potash, acid phosphate in the form of bone flour, or sulphate of potash, are also very effective. My system of fertilization every other Fall I give my land a top-dressing of stable manure, ploughing under and alternate with lime, using this as a top-dressing.
