Book Description
Our rivers and lakes are continuously self-purifying thanks to algal and bacterial biofilms that grow over the surface of stones and other debris. This same process has been employed for over a century to treat our municipal and industrial wastewater in specially designed fixed film reactors that maximize this microbial activity by providing ideal growth conditions and unlimited food and oxygen. Fixed film, or attached biofilm, reactors are unique in their ability to treat complex wastewaters and shock loadings; using far less energy than other wastewater treatment processes such as activated sludge, making them a sustainable treatment option.Targeted at undergraduate and postgraduate engineers and scientists, this book follows the structure of bestseller Biology of Wastewater Treatment. This volume gives an expanded and up-to-date overview of the use of fixed-film reactors in wastewater treatment with content spanning from biofilm formation, to traditional trickling filters and rotating biological contactor technology, advanced submerged systems (including MBBRs and IFAS) and their key role in the treatment of contaminated air, and finally to nitrogen removal employing new microbial pathways such as Anammox. This monograph emphasizes the biological aspects of the processes.

Book Description
Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering is a step-by-step implementation manual in three volumes, detailing the selection and design of industrial liquid and solid waste treatment systems. It consolidates all the process engineering principles required to evaluate a wide range of industrial facilities, starting with pollution prevention and source control and ending with end-of-pipe treatment technologies. Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering guides experienced engineers through the various steps of industrial liquid and solid waste treatment. The structure of the text allows a wider application to various levels of experience. By beginning each chapter with a simplified explanation of applicable theory, expanding to practical design discussions, and finishing with system Flowsheets and Case Study detail calculations, readers can "enter or leave" a section according to their specific needs. As a result, this set serves as a primer for students engaged in environmental engineering studies AND a comprehensive single-source reference for experienced engineers. Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering includes design principles applicable to municipal systems with significant industrial influents. The information presented in these volumes is basic to conventional treatment procedures, while allowing evaluation and implementation of specialized and emerging treatment technologies. What makes Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering unique is the level of process engineering detail. The facility evaluation section includes a step-by-step review of each major and support manufacturing operation, identifying probable contaminant discharges, practical prevention measures, and point source control procedures. This theoretical plant review is followed by procedures to conduct a site specific pollution control program. The unit operation chapters contain all the details needed to complete a treatment process design.

Book Description
Many physico-chemical and operational factors influence the performance, treatment costs and long-term stability of biofilters for the treatment of wastewater. An Innovative Role of Biofiltration in Wastewater Treatment Plants focuses on identifying the factors that affect biofiltration, such as the hydraulic retention time of the biofiltration system, the type and characteristics of the filter and the attached biomass, explains their influence and provides guidelines on how to control these factors to optimize better operation with respect to pollutant control present in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The fundamental basis of treatment in biofilters is the action of pollutant-degrading microorganisms and consequently the book also discusses in depth about the microbial ecology of biofiltration. In addition, it explores the applications of biofiltration including the removal of emerging pollutants. Describes the microbial ecology of biofiltration Includes modeling of biofiltration Describes the designing of biofilters, start-up, and monitoring Discusses the mechanism of biofiltration Describes the controlling and operational factors of biofiltration

Book Description
This comprehensive text provides the reader with both a detailed reference and a unified course on wastewater treatment. Aimed at scientists and engineers, it deals with the environmental and biological aspects of wastewater treatment and sludge disposal. The book starts by examining the nature of wastewaters and how they are oxidized in the natural environment. An introductory chapter deals with wastewater treatment systems and examines how natural principles have been harnessed by man to treat his own waste in specialist reactors. The role of organisms is considered by looking at kinetics, metabolism and the different types of micro-organisms involved. All the major biological process groups are examined in detail, in highly referenced chapters; they include fixed film reactors, activated sludge, stabilization ponds, anaerobic systems and vegetative processes. Sludge treatment and disposal is examined with particular reference to the environmental problems associated with the various disposal routes. A comprehensive chapter on public health looks at the important waterborne organisms associated with disease, as well as removal processes within treatment systems. Biotechnology has had an enormous impact on wastewater treatment at every level, and this is explored in terms of resource reuse, biological conversion processes and environmental protection. Finally, there is a short concluding chapter that looks at the sustainability of waste water treatment. The text is fully illustrated and supported by over 3000 references./a

Book Description
The main subject of the Workshop was the new developments about the cost effective treatment techniques for better removal efftciencies and dis cussion of policies for pollution control. Although effluent water quality requirements differ from one country to another, their application will be an efficient mean for water pollution control. Specific promotion should be provided for polluters to meet the effluent water quality requirements. Results of pilot scale studies demonstrate the applicability of and ad vantages of sequenching batch reactor technology for pretreatment of in dustrial wastewaters Fixed film biological reactors offer the possibility to enrich slow growing specialized microorganisms by developing biofilms on support materials. Physical chemical processes are used for the treatment of unusual and difficult industrial wastewaters and membrane technologies for the con centration and recovery of raw materials and by-products, in industries where the conventional treatment technologies are inappropriate or uneco nomic~ Physical chemical processes give higher efficiencies when polymers are applied but the composition of these long chain chemicals is an im portant consideration; Most developing countries suffer from severe environmental problems and shortage of energy and resources. These countries urgently need simple, inexpensive and integrated environmental protection system, which combine wastewater treatment with recovery and reuse. Anaerobic treatment offer many advantages in this respect. Because recovery of substances from wastes serves twofold purpose of recyle and pollution control, it must be applied where possible.
