Book Description
A newspaperman, an ex-Navy vice-admiral, a steel worker, a farmer, and the 124th Emperor of Japan himself--these are the fascinating heroes of Gibney's brilliant book about modern Japan. Strongly individual, every one of them, the five yet share the common inheritance of Japan's precocious but unstable past. Through their lives and attitudes, Gibney gives us an invaluable analysis of this new sovereign nation so suddenly thrown into the world's power conflicts. He helps us understand the historical and social forces which make Japan what she is today--the old contracts and loyalties from which each of the Five Gentlemen is struggling to break away from his country. Their courageous efforts to weld a new Japan from the remains of the old society, and to come to terms with the present, are as exciting as it is important.

Book Description
The account of a life spanning almost sixty years of work in the film industry in England, Hollywood, India, and throughout the world. Peter Hopkinson joined Denham Studios as a clapper loader at 16 and quickly became a camera assistant, working with directors like King Vidor and Michael Powell, and stars such as Marlene Dietrich and Robert Donat. In 1940 he joined the army and, working for the British Army Film and Photographic Unit, helped to film the Battle of Alamein, allied landings in Italy, partisan actions in Yugoslavia and Greece and the Japanese surrender in Siam (Thailand), among many other assignments. After the war he became a director-cameraman, mainly for the March of Time newsreels, continuing to film from war zones and trouble spots, but also creating documentaries (many of them award-winning) that analysed life in peacetime: politics, scientific advance, social upheaval in the developing world and changing lifestyles at home. In later life he was hired by UNESCO to pass on his mastery of documentary film-making to a new generation of international youth at the Film Institute of India. In this book Peter Hopkinson presents not just an account of his own amazing life and work but a lucid and comprehensive history of the moving image itself, the supreme popular art form of our time. Includes more than 100 photographs. 'A history of the moving image told from the perspective of somebody who has experienced many of the major developments in the industry at first hand.' Melvyn Bragg (Controller Arts, London Weekend Television) "A real contribution to the literature of film in the 20th century." Raymond Fielding (Dean and Professor School of Motion Picture Television and Recording Arts Florida State University)

Book Description
This book is about Americans not of Japanese ancestry, who served as Japanese language officers in World War II. Covering the period 1940-1945, it describes their selection, training, and service in the Navy and Marine Corps during the war and their contributions to maintenance of good relations between America and Japan thereafter. It argues that their service as “code breakers” and combat interpreters hastened victory and that their cross-cultural experience and linguistic knowledge facilitated the successful dismantling of the Japanese Empire and the peaceful occupation of Japan. The book shows how the war changed relations between the Navy and academia, transformed the lives of these 1200 men and women, and set onetime enemies on course to enduring friendship. Its purpose is twofold: to reveal an exciting and hitherto unknown aspect of the Pacific War and to demonstrate the enduring importance of linguistic and cross-cultural knowledge within America’s armed forces in war and peace alike. The book is meant for the general reader interested in World War II, as well as academic specialists and other persons particularly interested in that conflict. It will also appeal to readers with an interest in America’s intelligence establishment and to those interested in Japan and its relations with the United States. This history tells and exciting and previously unknown story of men and women whose brains and devotion to duty enabled them to learn an extraordinarily difficult language and use it in combat and ashore to hasten Japan’s defeat and transformation from enemy to friend of America.
