The purpose of this investigation is to study the factors which produce fissility or non-fissility in argillaceous rocks such as shale and underclay. A field and laboratory study was conducted to investigate the factors. Samples of Pennsylvanian shales and underclays were obtained from outcrops and drill cores in Illinois. Sections of rock cut parallel and perpendicular to the fissile structure or top surface were x-rayed in order to determine the orientation of the clay mineral particles. This was done to determine the relationship of clay mineral orientation to the development of fissility. The laboratory phase consisted of sedimenting clay material of various concentrations in solutions of different cation concentrations. Both clay and cation concentrations were similar to those existing in nature The purpose of this phase was to study the effect of various sedimentary environments upon flocculation and dispersion of clay material and how this influences the final orientation in a dried clay cake. The laboratory approach was undertaken to study the influence exerted by clay and cation concentration upon the development of fissility in argillaceous rocks. Samples of clay were also compressed in the laboratory in a compression apparatus. Clay cakes of different water contents were compressed by various weights in order to investigate the relationship of water content and overburden pressure in producing fissility. Thus, four factors were studied which are believed to have an important influence upon the development of fissility: clay concentration, cation concentration, water content in clay material, and overburden pressure.
