Book Description
Excerpt from Fishing Probably few persons who visited the late International Fisheries Exhibition in South Kensington could fail to have been struck by the multiplicity, and, to the un initiated, complexity of the engines and appliances used in the capture of fish. The Observation applies even more to the 'angler' - a generic term that I have a special objection to, by the way, but let us say to the fisherman who uses a rod - than to the 'fisherman' proper, whose weapons are net and hand-line, and who 'occupies his business in great waters.' Book Description
Excerpt from Favorite Fish and Fishing North, and of our own Dr. Bethune and Thaddeus Norris, could they revisit the glimpses of the moon, would View with wonder and silent sorrow the tendency of many anglers of the present day toward strenuosity, abandoning the verdure-clad stream, with its warbling birds and fra grant blossoms, for the hissing steam launch and Vile-smelling motor boat in pursuit of leaping tuna and silver king. It goes with out saying, however, that considered as a sport, fishing for these jumbos is highly exciting and capable of infusing unbounded enthusiasm, but it can hardly be called anghng. Book Description
Excerpt from Fly Fishing Numerous pens have been engaged dur ing the last few years on the subject of fly fishing, but the editors feel sure that the volume by Sir Edward Grey, with which the Haddon Hall Library opens, will not be re garded by anglers as superfluous. Gardens and gardening, too, are to be treated of, and will again receive the attention of one who has never yet failed to enrich English literature when he has taken up his pen to write on the well-loved theme. Book Description
Excerpt from The Fine Art of Fishing While the Eastern brook trout is undoubtedly in coloration the most beautiful of all game fishes, in for mation, especially as regards very large trout of, say, three pounds or over, its position is not so clearly first. The male trout of this weight, however finely marked with var ious tints of blue, crimson, and gold, tends dangerously to aldermanic girth and, with his usual under-shot and cruel lower jaw, is rather a creature to respect for gameness and fighting-blood than to admire artistically. The quality of coloration in the brook trout, too, is dependent to a great extent upon the immediate sur roundings affected by the fish. That this is a matter Of protective coloration should go Without gainsaying. In very dark waters, well shaded and with muddy or dark ly colored bottom, the brook trout is sympathetically Of subdued coloration, sometimes almost black - a very dark purple. On the other hand, in clear streams run ning over white gravel or pebbly beds, the trout are lightly tinted and Often have a golden luster or sheen that is unequaled for beauty. The wise men tell us that variation Of color in brook trout is caused by the light acting through the nerves of the eye upon certain color glands. It is also dependent to a certain extent upon the natural food most common to the stream, trout which have an abundance of insect food being the most brilliant in coloration as well as the largest. Book Description
Excerpt from Anecdotes of Fish and Fishing In this age of improvement, even our sports are wont to be offered to us with a philosophic halo around them. Walton, long ago, made Angling a medium for inculcating the most fervent piety and the purest morality. Nor can the finny tribes themselves fail to excite in our minds surprise and admiration, whether we consider the singularities of their construction, the diversity of their forms, or their vast im portance to man. On these interesting subjects the author has confined himself to a few cursory remarks in his introductory chapter, and to the small gleanings from the labours of Cuvier and Roget, which commence his piscatorial reminis cences. Fearful of wading beyond his depth, he has principally directed his attention to such anecdotes, and facts, as he trusts will prove acceptable to the public in general and to Anglers in particular.
