Book Description
Excerpt from First Year in German The natural method (which has been very aptly called the plunge and struggle method) goes to the other extreme. It subordinates systematic study and the practical knowledge of grammar to the acquisition of words and phrases, exercising and cultivating the memory rather than the discriminative faculty of the student. Book Description
Excerpt from First Year German I take pleasure in acknowledging my obligations to the per sons from whom I have had aid. Mr. M. Grant Daniell did me the favor to read a part of the proof-sheets with his accustomed care. Miss Frida von Unwerth, of the Ethical Culture School, New York, read the proof-sheets and prepared the general vocab ularies. To Miss Anna B. Eckstein, Principal of the Modern School of Languages, Boston, I owe heartiest thanks for her cor rections, criticisms, and suggestions, especially in connection with the proof-reading of the exercises. Her thorough knowledge of her own language, combined with her insight as a teacher, has made this help invaluable. Book Description
Excerpt from First Lessons in German The lessons that constitute this first volume were chosen from material prepared for classes during a period of eleven years (1881 - 1892) and after they were printed and used experimentally for a period of four years (january 1894-february it was thought safe to say that, in the form in which they now appear, they may be used advantageously in classes of adults and also in classes of children of over eleven years of age. In order to produce satisfactory results in classes of adults of somewhat slow comprehension the lesson had to be gone over more than once in the same session. This mode of procedure was almost invariably followed in classes composed of children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A First German Book A long experience in teaching modern languages, in Europe and Ameriea, has taught me that a correct knowledge of any language, or even practieal ability in speaking and writing it, ean never be acquired without some grammatical system followed in studying it; but I have also learned that every system, however thorough and correct it may be, must be based on the pupil's eapacity and intelligence, and supported by practical exercises. Thus, in preparing this first german Boox, limited to the most fundamental forms of the language following each other in their natural order, and to a vocabulary and phraseology within the Sphere of a beginner, it has been my constant aim to combine. Correctness and thoroughness with a simplicity and cleamess of the instruction and explanations, that even the weakest pupil will not fail to gradually acquire a knowledge of the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from First Book in German IN this book an attempt has been made to work out, for the classroom, the principles I have set forth in The Teaching of German in Secondary Schools. It is not a radical textbook, yet I trust that ardent reformers will find in it abundant reading material and exercises thor oughly in harmony with the direct method. English sentences for translation have been provided, however, for the benefit of those teachers who wish to use them. Book Description
Excerpt from German Life: A Cultural Reader for the First Year I do not believe that this type of German first reader is the only one from which the student may derive profit. But I do believe it to be the most important type; because surely it is necessary for the beginner to become acquainted with the real words which express actual, contemporary German living and doing before he comes to dwell in the world of romance and fable, fairy-tale and folklore, in the world of poetry, song, and old-fashioned symbol. Book Description
Excerpt from Second Year in German The present volume is a continuation of the First Year in German. The favorable reception accorded to the latter has encouraged the author to continue in this volume the general plan of its predecessor. The fact that the Second Year is intended for more advanced students necessitated some changes, which, however, are of slight importance. The Reading Matter in most of the Lessons of this volume is longer than in the first book. This was made possible without burdening the student with too large a number of new words in each Lesson, first by an extensive use of the vocabulary of the First Year in the present volume, and second by devoting much attention to a systematic treatment of the derivation and formation of words. As to the first, it naturally resulted in a considerable enlargement of the German English and english-german vocabulary at the end of the volume; but on the other hand it affords the decided advantage of a review of the previous year's wor.k As regards the second, it enables the student to acquire a knowledge of the relationship existing between words belonging to the same family, i. E., hav ing the same root. The more familiar the student becomes with this relationship of words, the less the necessity of memorizing words and their meaning.
