This desire becomes in man the desire of property - of wealth. Items of wealth. - The items of wealth are very numerous. Land, houses, furniture, clothing, carriages, watches, money, fruit, cattle - these and a great many other things constitute the wealth or riches of a country. Two things common. - Two things are common to all these articles: 1. They are adapted to gratify some desire; 2. They can be appropriated - that is, can be owned by some person or persons. All articles adapted to gratify desire and capable of appropriation come under the head of wealth. Air and sunlight. - Some objects of desire do not come under the head of wealth. Air is very desirable. All want it, and cannot live without it; but it is not an item of wealth. It cannot be appropriated - cannot become private property. This is owing to its abundance. Should he take his stand for this purpose at one of these points, say Lowell, he will be struck at once by some of the differences between what he saw on the bridge and what he now sees in the mill. He will indeed see as before some commodities brought in and carried out, such as the raw cotton and new machinery and the finished product ready for sale, but in general no other commodities than the cotton in its various stages of manu facture, and those like the machinery and means of trans portation directly connected with transforming the cotton into cloth and taking it to market. Excerpt from Capital: A Critique of Political Economy; The Process of Capitalist Production The present volume consists, mainly, of the first nine chap ters of Volume I., -of Marx's Capitol, which are now, not for the first time, however, reprinted. These chapters have long been recognized to contain the theoretical part of the Marxian system, in so far as it applies to political economy, i.e., the laws of value surplus - value, and money. Former editions being now out of print, or otherwise unobtainable, it is considered desirable to issue the present book, which is in tended to be used as a text - book for economic classes and the like, as being more convenient to the needs of group - stu dents than the bulky volume of Capital, and, particularly in view of the uniform non-success which has attended the numerous attempts to popularize, or simplify Capital, more desirable than these. The practical application of the theories here expounded must, of course, be studied in the complete work, and in the voluminous post-marxian literature. One thing more: Marx ian economics can be understood only, and should be studied only as forming part of a complete whole - a system - which has been called, not very happily, the Socialist Philosophy. For this reason there has been included the famous 32nd chapter of Capital, and the following extract from the preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, is presented as indicating the manner in which Marx himself approached this problem.
