The discovery of antimatter in the early 1930s posed a new puzzle: at some point in the past, the universe contained equal amounts of matter and antimatter, which should have annihilated each other completely. However, the existence of galaxies, planets, and our own bodies demonstrates that some of the matter survived this primordial annihilation, while the antimatter did not. This indicates that there must be a small matter-antimatter asymmetry in the laws of physics. Understanding these laws involves measuring the parameters governing them. The best way to measure a matter-antimatter asymmetry parameter called gamma is with particular radioactive decays of short-lived particles created in dedicated particle accelerators. This thesis describes the 1998 discovery of these decays, which constituted the first step toward the subsequent measurement of gamma. The thesis opens with a layperson-friendly introduction, using a simple analogy between particle physics and poetry. With this basic understanding at hand, the reader is led through the details of the measurement and its hi-tech apparatus, obtaining an insider's view of how cutting-edge particles-physics experiments are performed

This book presents the latest results on the branching fraction and phase space distribution of B0 and Bs0 decays into final states including excited neutral charm mesons. This work represents four years of research, and the book describes in detail all the necessary steps and techniques required to perform a physics analysis of the data recorded by the LHCb experiment in the years 2016–2018. Although the results presented in this book represent the first measurement of such decays, the text is written in a manner accessible to Ph.D. students and early career researchers. Thus, all the contents included in this book are described in a pedagogical way, including technical details that would allow the results to be reproduced in future. We present the first observation of the decay $ar{B}$$0top{s}$→ D$±top{s}$ K∓ and measure the relative branching fraction of $ar{B}$$0top{s}$ → D$±top{s}$ K∓ to $ar{B}$$0top{s}$ → D$+top{s}$ ?-. The measurement of the relative branching fraction is performed by applying a fit in invariant mass and specific ionization to 1.2 fb-1 of Ds(??)X data collected with the CDF II detector in pp collisions at √ s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We measure B $ar{B}$$0top{s}$ → D$±top{s}$ K∓ /B $ar{B}$$0top{s}$ → D$+top{s}$ ?- = 0.107±0.019(stat)±0.008(sys). The statistical significance of the $ar{B}$$0top{s}$ → D$±top{s}$ K∓ signal is 7.9?. To cross-check our analysis method, we also measure B $ar{B0}$→ D+K- /B $ar{B0}$ → D+?- and B $ar{B0}$ → D+*K- /B $ar{B0}$ → D*+?- and verify that our results are in agreement with the world average.

The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics has withstood thus far every attempt by experimentalists to show that it does not describe data. We discuss the SM in some detail, focusing on the mechanism of fermion mixing, which represents one of its most intriguing aspects. We discuss how this mechanism can be tested in b-quark decays, and how b decays can be used to extract information on physics beyond the SM. We review experimental techniques in b physics, focusing on recent results and highlighting future prospects. Particular attention is devoted to recent results from b decays into a hadron, a lepton and an anti-lepton, that show discrepancies with the SM predictions — the so-called B-physics anomalies — whose statistical significance has been increasing steadily. We discuss these experiments in a detailed manner, and also provide theoretical interpretation of these results in terms of physics beyond the SM.
