Book Description
Excerpt from First Lessons in Geography: On the Plan of Object Teaching The plan of this little work is such, that the subject is presented in the most simple form. It treats of general features, such as the locality and description of Continents, Countries, States, Rivers, Mountains, &c., without dwelling prematurely upon details which embarrass the learner in his first effort. The Maps are free from all meridians, parallels of latitude, and any superabundance of names; thereby giving a greater prominence to the general divisions of land and water. The plan of Object Teaching, by which the mind receives impressions through the medium of the eye, is here so combined with the Map Exercises, that a child just able to read is at once interested and instructed. Book Description
Excerpt from First Notions of Geography Any text on geography would be unintelligible without il lustrations, and the illustration peculiar to geography is the map. This little book lays the foundation for the study of the map by the lessons on direction and on the elevations and depressions of the earth's surface. The forces of nature, and the various phenomena connected with the sun, moon, and stars, are all closely related to geography, and cannot be overlooked in any presentation of that subject, however simple. The lessons on the materials which supply our food, clothing, and shelter are an introduction to that larger study of geography which reveals how nature and the forces of nature have been made to render service to man. Book Description
Excerpt from Lessons in Physical Geography This book has been written in the belief that physical geography is not only interesting and valuable in its sub ject matter, but is capable, when properly presented, of developing a scientific habit of mind. No attempt is made to discuss all the physical features of the earth, or those of any special region. The best type forms are selected and treated with sufficient fullness to give a clear and definite picture. From a study of the type general laws are developed, and the student is thus provided with a key for the solution of geographical problems wherever they may arise. Each topic is treated inductively. The essential facts are first given, and the student is then guided to a knowledge of their causes, significance, and results. This plan makes it possible to avoid in some degree the vague generalizations which are characteristic of most text-books. The student is in possession of a sufficient number of facts to enable him to see the basis and appreciate the value of the generalizations which follow. A large number of realistic exercises are introduced which appeal to the actual or possible experience of the student. They are designed not for the purpose of discovery but of realization, and to give some idea of the methods and possibilities of geo graphic research. These exercises include both field and laboratory work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Easy Lessons in Geography and History: Designed for the Use of the Younger Classes in the New England Schools The work he prepared on this plan, was of very humble pretensions, it having been no part of the author's design to give a complete system, in an abridged form, of the subjects to which it relates. It was simply what it pro fessed to bow-easy Lessons in Geography and History; designed not to be a substitute for other works of the kind, but rather to serve as an introduction to others. As it respects the present edition, which, as I it is stereotyped, is intended to be of a per manent form, the author trusts that it will be found to be an improvement on the former editions. The whole work has been re-written and considerably enlarged, and the catecheti cal form, which was at first adopted, has been exchanged for the familiar conversation, or the continued narrative, accompanied with questions, either interspersed through thework, or, as in the case with the Second Part, placed at the bottom of the page. These changes, though they may not lessen the labor of the teacher, will, it is believed, render the book more attractive to the pupil, and thereby facilitate his progress. The teacher is earnestly requested to attend to the directions which will be found scattered in various parts of the book; as, otherwise, the design of the author will be, in a great measure, frustrated. He is particularly anxious that the method he has recommended, in regard to the use of maps and the black board, should be tested by a fair experiment, wherever this book may be used.
