Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Medical Electricity: The Rontgen Rays and Finsen Light The whole of the first and second editions of this work being out of print, my publishers have requested me to prepare a third edition, and I do this all the more willingly because of the great advance which has recently been made in the treatment of disease by the Rontgen rays and 'finsen light. Several new chapters dzaling with this important subject have been added, and the nature, pro duction, and use of the Finsen or ultra - violet light has been considered at some length. The earlier portions of the book have been carefully revised and brought up to date the apparatus for use with the mains and the charging of accumulators in private houses has received more attention; new matter has been added to the chapter on electrolysis; the electrical resistance of the blood isv considered in the Chapter on electro - diagnosis. I am again indebted to Dr. R. Milne Murray for some remarks upon the Apostoli treatment, and to Mr. David Wallace, Ed., for revising and rewriting the chapter on the cystoscope. I also wish to acknowledge the assistance I have had from Dr. Hope Fowler, assistant physician in the electrical department, in the treatment of many of the cases, and in preparing them for publication. Book Description
Excerpt from Columbus Medical Journal, 1904, Vol. 28: A Magazine of Medicine and Surgery Having read and heard so much about the Finsen Light treatment in the cure Of disease, I decided in April of this year, to make a personal investigation to see and learn for myself if it was true that such diseases as lupus and rodent ulcer could be cured by light. I visited several institutions where the Finsen Lamp was in operation. In Manchester, England, in the Salford skin hospital, they had a Finsen Light department under the supervision of Prof. Brooke, who informed me they were unable to treat half the sufferers who applied for treatment, and they had solicited, by public subscription, for the erection Of a new hospital for skin diseases, where they would be able to enlarge the light department so at least 200 people could be treated daily, as there were people on their waiting list whom they would be unable to treat, with their present facilities, for an indefinite time. Prof. Brooke was most enthusiastic over the wonderful results they were Obtaining there. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the American Therapeutic Society, 1900-1902 The results of the Finsen light treatment in lupus have been remarkably satisfactory. In lupus erythematosus they are not so striking; in alopecia areata they are encouraging. Epithelioma of the skin has been markedly benefited, while rodent ulcer is difficult to treat. It is suggested that leprosy might also prove to be amen able to this treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Bio-Chemical Journal, 1909, Vol. 4 Experimental evidence of this persistence of relationship to light of all cells exists of two kinds; there is first the deleterious effects of complete withdrawal of light for prolonged periods, and the necessity of sunlight. For healthy existence; and, secondly, there is the direct evidence of the effects of application of strong light to animal cells seen in the Finsen effects, and in other forms of radiant energy allied to light. It is, however, in the more lowly organized types of both animal and vegetable organisms that the strongest and most direct reactions to light are observable - apart from the particular case of the reaction of chemical synthesis in the chlorophyll-containing cells of the green parts of the higher plants. Examples of this reactivity are seen in the effects of sunlight upon nearly all types of bacteria; in the sudden outburst of vegetable life in the form of diatoms in the spring of each year as the length of the day increases and the more vertical light reaches and penetrates the water before there is much increase in the temperature of the sea - an outburst upon which the whole life of the sea is as thoroughly dependent as that of the terrestrial world is upon the similar outburst of activity in land plants; and in the most marked movements which occur towards or from the light according to varying circumstances of the minute organisms, either larval or adult, which chiefly constitute the plankton or floating life of the ocean.
