This Book includes selected papers that has been published in the Water journal Special Issue (SI) on Water Supply and Water Scarcity. Moreover, an overview of the SI is included. The papers selected for publication in the SI include review and research papers on water history, on water management issues under water scarcity regimes, on rainwater harvesting, on water quality and degradation, and on climatic variability impacts on water resources. Overall, the issue identify and highlight the main challenges in water sector, and particularly in management and protection of water resources and in use of alternative (non-conventional) water resources, especially in areas with demographic change and climate vulnerability in order to achieve sustainable and secure water supply. The Central North Dakota Water Supply Project (Project) Alternative Study (Study) is an evaluation of alternatives to supply Missouri River water to potential municipal, rural, and industrial (MR&I) users, and to irrigation users in the central North Dakota region. CHS Inc., owner of a planned fertilizer manufacturing plant to be located in Spiritwood, North Dakota (ND) (CHS Spiritwood facility), approximately 10 miles east of Jamestown, ND, has expressed interest in obtaining a reliable water supply from the Missouri River. The Study examines 15 alternatives that combine the near-term water supply needs of the CHS Spiritwood facility with other potential needs in central North Dakota. Study alternatives vary with regard to their water supply needs, water sources and locations, alignments, lengths, and environmental permitting requirements. The overall goal of the Study is to assist the State of North Dakota in selection of a water source and pipeline alignment that can be designed, permitted, and constructed as soon as practicable, but no later than 2023, to meet the water supply needs of the CHS Spiritwood facility and other users.
