Water resources are under tremendous pressure due to growing demand, climate change and anthropogenic pollution in Lebanon. Rapidly declining water quality is a key indicator of the water resource degradation that characterizes now both the freshwater and marine environment across the country. The project “Improved Water Resources Monitoring System/Integrated Water Resources Management at regional level in Lebanon”, funded by the Swiss Government, is designed to establish a comprehensive water monitoring system in the North of Lebanon with the overall objective to strengthen the capacity of Lebanon’s water institutions and improving their performance at regional level, thereby helping them address the sector challenges for sustainable use of water resources. The term 'comprehensive monitoring system' refers to the integrated information generation, capturing quantity, quality and demand of agricultural water, as well as the climate parameters. The project outcome is a timely contribution to the water sector development in Lebanon, which is now encountering a period of unprecedented difficulties, aggravated by the economic crisis.

Groundwater is the world’s largest source of fresh water, but its safe and sustainable exploitation remains a challenge. Egypt's Nile Valley aquifer is the most important renewable aquifer, accounting for approximately 85% of total groundwater use in Egypt. Egypt's long-term development and socioeconomic growth in the Nile Valley depends on this groundwater. Concerns about groundwater assessment, quality, management, and sustainability frame the current status of Nile Valley groundwater supplies. Proper knowledge of the current state of the groundwater quantity and quality in the Nile Valley is vital for the development and management of groundwater resources in Egypt. Due to Egypt's water scarcity, the projected decline in Nile River flow due to climate change, and the development of numerous Nile River basin projects, the situation is critical, and the consequences might be severe. Furthermore, Egypt's growing population puts significant strain on groundwater, which is the second most significant freshwater supply next to the surface water supply coming from the Nile River as Egypt’s share. Several books on the various aspects of Egypt's water resources have been published, but there is insufficient recent information on groundwater in the Nile Valley aquifer, which is essential for Egyptian populations for domestic and irrigation purposes. As a result, this book on the groundwater in the Nile Valley aquifer emerges to complete the picture of Egypt’s water resources as a good example of arid country located in MENA regions with many arid countries. Consequently, the lessons learned from this book could be beneficial to other countries in MENA regions, particularly those in North Africa.

The State of the World's Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture is FAO's first flagship publication on the global status of land and water resources. The Government of Egypt is committed to enhancing food security and developing the country’s agricultural sector through the sustainable management of its natural resources and the active improvement of its institutional capacities. The national “Poverty Reduction and Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy” well align with this objective by calling for the promotion of a more efficient and market-oriented agriculture and optimal use of land and water resources. The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR), in line with the national Strategy, implemented the On-Farm Irrigation Development in the Old-Lands project (OFIDO), an agribusiness development programme funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Fund (IFAD), with the aim to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor living in selected command areas in Lower, Middle and Upper Egypt. In order to evaluate and define future investment strategies and policies for the implementation of successful interventions in Agricultural Water Management, the Government of Egypt entrusted the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to conduct an independent Technical Assessment and provide a comprehensive overview of the performance of improved irrigation systems in three Governorates in the project area of intervention. The Technical Assessment was carried out in two main complementary phases which allowed a thorough evaluation of both the technical and the economic components of the project.
