Book Description
In the 1980s, Thailand experienced a remarkable revolution in reproductive behavior, resulting in a rapidly declining fertility rate. The authors of this book follow an unusual approach that combines qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the reasons for this decline. Their work makes possible a thorough understanding, in demographic, socioeconomic, and cultural terms, of a phenomenon of critical importance to Developing World population trends and development. The Thai experience is an especially important case study in part because its fertility decline took place while the country was still at only a moderate stage of socioeconomic development and because the changes in reproductive behavior and attitudes have been so pervasive, permeating almost all segment so of Thai society. The authors have amassed an impressive amount of data, which they present and interpret in the clearest of terms, in forming what will certainly be the standard work on this topic, of interest and value to demographers and all others concerned with Developing World problems.

Book Description
With the emergence of fertility declines in the greater part of the developing world, study of the phenomenon has increased profoundly over the last three decades, and a voluminous amount of literature has emerged. Yet our knowledge of the decline is scattered in numerous publications, making sources difficult to find. This bibliography provides a guide to the literature on fertility decline in Latin America, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. It will be an invaluable asset for population experts and students wishing to do research on fertility decline. Covering the literature from 1960 to 1997, the book draws on extensive sources including books, articles in leading population journals, research papers, and dissertations. The opening chapter covers the literature on theories and concepts underlying fertility decline. The next three chapters are devoted to the major geographical areas—Latin America, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa—and the final chapter looks at general literature on fertility declines in developing countries.

Book Description
In South-Eastern Asian countries, the remarkable decrease in fertility is one of significant demographic phenomenon of the last decades. Still, child labour is sees as a crucial, pressing issue that pervades the developing world. In this thesis I study the link between the demographic transition - fertility and mortality decline that took place in Thailand recently and the changing pattern of work for school-aged children. After a description of the situation and a review of the literature, I focus on an empirical analysis of panel data on the Nang Rong district. Results are in line with the prediction that fertility decline along with economic development has a positive influence on parental choices about the economic activity of their offspring.
