The Enlistment Screening Test (EST), used by recruiters to determine whether male applicants for enlistment should be sent on for further testing with the Armed Forces Qualification Test, is a 48-item test. Recent developments in psychological testing point to the use of much shorter tests for such limited objectives as estimating the likelihood that an individual will be able to qualify for military service on the AFQT. Forty 8-item tests were assembled from AFQT 7 and 8 on the basis of item data available from the standardization study. Two methods of selecting items and two methods of establishing cutting scores were applied experimentally. The 8-item tests were highly comparable to the 48-item EST in the percentages of examinees classified the same as they were classified by AFQT. The simpler methods of selecting items and setting cutting scores proved as effective as the more elaborate and timeconsuming methods. (Author).
