Last year (1432), some members of the Ta'limi Board (KZN) visited Nizaamuddeen and met one of the elders, Hadhrat MoulanaYa'qoob Saahib (daamat barakaatuhu), the ustaaz of Moulana Sa'aadSaahib (daamat barakaatuhu). Hadhrat Moulana advised them to commence the reading of the Fazaail-e-Aamaal to the children in order to encourage them to carry out the necessary aamaal (good deeds). He mentioned that we are teaching only the masaail (laws) of salaah, etc., in the makaatib but the children will not be encouraged to perform salaah by just learning the masaail. We will have to read to them the fazaail (virtues and benefits) to encourage them to perform salaah. Hadhrat Moulana Ya'qoob Saahib (daamat barakaatuhu) also advised that the Fazaail-e-Aamaal be simplified and brought down to the level of the children so that they are encouraged to engage in Aamaal-e-Saaliha (good deeds). Therefore, in the light of Hadhrat Moulana Ya'qoob Saahib's advice, Hadhrat Mufti Ebrahim Salejee Saahib (daamat barakaatuhu), the principal of Madrasah Taleemuddeen, initiated the simplifying of the Fazaail-e-Aamaal for the benefit of the children in the makaatib. This book is divided into 7 parts, viz. Stories of Sahaabah, Virtuesof Salaah, Virtues of reciting the Quraan, Virtues of zikr, Virtues of Durood Shareef, Virtues of Ramadhaan and virtues of tableegh. Apart of each section should be read out and explained daily to the children. This should be done 5 minutes before they leave for home. Annotation. In the aftermath of 9/11 Islamic seminaries or madrasas received much media attention in India, mostly owing to the alleged link between madrasa education and forms of violence. Yet, while ample information on madrasas for boys is available, similar institutions of Islamic learning for girls have for the greater part escaped public attention so far. This study investigates how madrasas for girls emerged in India, how they differ from madrasas for boys, and how female students come to interpret Islam through the teachings they receive in these schools. Observations suggest that, next to the official curriculum, the 'informal' curriculum plays an equally important role.
