The analysis was carried out with the purpose of estimating fatigue damage and fatigue life. Information on the fatigue life and damage prediction procedures is included. The report summarizes the findings of an experimental study on the fatigue behavior of a full-size aircraft-carrier propeller and a patrol craft propeller. Supplementary data on the fatigue characteristics of the manganese bronze propeller material were determined. Fatigue life predictions based on nominal stress and fracture mechanics concepts are analyzed and discussed. There is evidence that with accurate inputs as to stress levels and service loadings, the fatigue life of large propellers could be predicted from specimen data using a fracture mechanics approach. Extensive fatigue tests were made on annealed Armco iron and plain carbon and alloy steels heat-treated to different strengths and microstructures. Statistics of fatigue-fracture curves and endurance limits were determined from the experimental data obtained and, for various other materials, from a survey of literature. The results were analyzed to show the relative effects of various metallurgical factors on the statistical nature of fatigue properties. Other phases of the problem studied include: dependence of statistical variation in fatigue life on stress level in the fracture range, statistics for location of crack initiation, size effect, understressing effect, and the form and method of plotting the S-N diagram.
