Book Description
The original English-language edition of this work appeared in 1979. Since then researchers around the world have made slow but steady progress toward the realization of sustained, controlled nuclear fusion. This new edition has been updated to review the important contributions of the past decade. The final chapter, "Confinement of High-Temperature Plasmas, " has been rewritten entirely to include the recent results of confinement in several types of devices and advances the under standing of wave heating. Miyamoto's approach is unique in encompassing Western, Soviet, and Japanese research in the fusion field. The book's 16 chapters are grouped into four major subject areas. Chapters in the first part develop the fundamentals of plasma physics and present the conditions of nuclear fusion reactions; those in the next two parts provide a magnetohydrodynamic description of plasmas and explain wave phenomena and instabilities by means of a kinetic model. Concluding chapters take up the problems of heating, diagnostics, and confinement. Specific topics include the Lawson condition; Boltzmann and Vlasov equations; plasma equilibrium; magnetohydrodynamic instabilities; waves in cold and hot plasmas; microinstabilities; fast neutral beam injection and wave heating; and diagnostics using microwaves, lasers, and energy analyzers. Plasma confinement in tokamaks and stellarators, multipole fields, mirrors, and cusps, as well as inertial confinement, are reviewed. Kenro Miyamoto, is Professor of Physics at the University of Tokyo.

Book Description
Fast wave heating in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) is being studied on the Princeton Large Torus (PLT) to evaluate its potential for heating large reactor-scale toroidal plasmas. Of primary interest are the two-ion and pure second harmonic heating regimes which, with proper control of the ion energy distribution and the rf power deposition profile, permit substantial energy glow into the bulk plasma ions. Initial heating experiments have been conducted with a single 1/2 turn antenna up to wave powers of P/sub rf/ approx. = 350 kW for durations of greater than or equal to 100 ms in the two-ion regime under conditions for which direct fundamental cyclotron damping on the minority ion species dominates the wave absorption. Ion-ion coupling serves to heat the majority ions and for energetic minority ion energy distributions, energy flow to the electrons results from electron drag. Substantial ion heating is found for D-p mixtures; .delta. T/sub d/(0) approx. = 600 eV for 350 kW with anti n/sub e/ approx. = 2 x 1013 cm−3. The deuteron heating efficiency is improved by about a factor of approx. 2 in D−3He mixtures; .delta. T/sub d/(0) approx. = 500 eV for 150 kW with anti n/sub e/ approx. = 2.1 x 1013 cm−3.

Book Description
Plasma heating using the fast magnetosonic wave in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies is being studied both experimentally and theoretically in order to evaluate its potential for heating reactor plasmas. RF pulses at power levels up to 800 kW and length>130 ms have been delivered to a set of two parallel 1/2 turn loop antennae with 80% of the power coupled to the plasma. The parallel antennae have been driven both in and out-of-place so that the k/sub phi/ dependence of the antenna coupling and plasma heating can be determined. The heating experiments were conducted in the two-ion hybrid regime where the deuterium plasma contained a small component of a second ion species (hydrogen or 3He). A bulk ion temperature increase of up to 1.2 keV has been achieved at the 620 kW power level with 3He as the minority species and anti n/sub e/ = 2.9 x 1013 cm−3. Energetic minority distributions have been detected consistent with theory.

Book Description
Cross and Manheimer/Lashmore-Davies sell steadily in the export market - potential for Cairns here. This book provides a concise introduction to the basic physics of radiofrequency heating. Most existing literature on the subject is at the research level, aimed at specialists in the field. It provides a survey of theoretical and experimental results with a large number of references to help the reader wishing for more detail. Provides a concise and readable account/ Basic physical principles are emphasised and more complicated mathematical ideas are explained in outline. Radiofrequency current drive is discussed in detail. "One criticsm may be lack of detail. I have deliberatly avoided including a lot of mathematical and experimental detail in order to keep the book short and to concentrate on the essential ideas. Enough references are given to lead anyone wishing more detail to the appropriate literature" - comment from the author? Export Market: Japan, USA, CERN, all important centres for fusion research Tokamaks - supercolliders for particle acceleration - particles are bombarded by extremely powerful lasers the beams of which are split many times through kms of piping - massive structurees largest currently in Japan but also important structure in US.
