The report discusses the development and use of the neutron activable tracer iridium to tag mineral particles in high explosive cratering charges (1) to simulate radioactive fallout from a nuclear cratering detonation and (2) to determine the effect on venting of various methods of stemming the charge emplacement hole. Data from four 907-kg (1-ton) and four 2.7-kg (6-lb) tests are analyzed to determine the effects of stemming methods on the fraction of material vented. The results of the four 907-kg (1-ton) detonations are also used to develop a relationship between iridium deposition and ionizing radiation dose rates from radioactive fallout.

Project Diamond Ore was initiated in FY 1971 to determine the effects of different types of stemming, depths of burial, and geologic conditions on the crater size and collateral effects produced by the subsurface detonation of a nuclear cratering device. This determination is being made by using a combination of hydrodynamic code calculations and large-scale chemical explosive charges to model the nuclear explosive energy source. TENPLT is a multipurpose plotting and editing code written for users of the two-dimensional TENSOR code at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The code is written in LRLTRAN (LRLLIB) for the CDC 7600 computer and is comprised of more than 6000 Fortran statements. TENPLT is highly user-oriented and displays plots on the TMDS (Television Monitor Display System) and on dd80 hardcopy. More than 60 basic or derived variables can be edited or plotted. Currently available plotting options consist of three types of grid plots, three types of contour plots, several types of profile plots, and two types of vector plots. Ballistic throwout and slope stability calculations for cratering problems are also performed. EOSLIB and XMUPGENS are auxiliary codes that generate and/or translate rock equation-of-state and failure tables for TENSOR, SOC, and SOC73, and produce material properties library files from SOC or SOC73 input data.
