Excerpt from Is Higher Farming a Remedy for Lower Prices? Upon the land manured With mineral superphosphate for the Swedes, the removal of about 8 tons of roots (and the tops) has reduced the produce of barley to 28% bushels, or to nearly 3 bushels less than the lowest unmanured produce; whilst the consumption of the Swedes on the land has raised the produce to nearly 40 bushels. The exhaustion of the soil by the re moval of the roots is thus equal to the loss of more than bushels of barley. Turning to the complex manure plots, it will be seen that, although from the portion from which the roots were carted a much larger quantity was removed than from the correspond ing portion of the superphosphate plots, still the crop of barley was very much greater. -it was, in fact, about 135 bushels more than where the superphosphate roots were removed, and even from 1 to 2 bushels more than where the superphosphate roots were consumed upon the land. After this brief 1 period of prosperity the country was startled by the sudden announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (mr. Austen Chamberlain) that the Government had set its heart upon gradually de ating the currency and he called upon the bankers to assist him in restricting credit. The bank rate was advanced to 7 per cent. And the game of squeezing industry for the benefit of bondaholders and money-lenders commenced. It was no mere coincidence that the trade slump started the very 'da this amazing speech of the Chancellor was pu lished. Realising that this de ation policy meant the slaughter of all values, the destruction of all enterprise. A drastic fall in prices and wholesale bankruptcy, the country took alarm and played for safety: No one cares to buy goods on a falling market. Orders began to be cancelled! Stocks 'were offered at prices below cost. The public de mand commenced. To slacken! Many workmen were put on short time whilst thousands more were discharged. And with the decrease in wages the public ability to buy goods also decreased. The idea that a policy of this nature could be under taken without a disaster to trade and industry, that.
