Book Description
Excerpt from Faith and Peace: Being Answers to Some of the "Essays and Reviews," By the Following Writers; William Edward Jelf, B. D., James Wayland Joyce, M. A., James Fendall, M. A., William Lee, D. D., Edgar Huxtable, M. A.; With a Preface by the Venerable Archdeacon Denison When a trial comes upon a national Church, that is, upon a Church established by law, such as has arisen out of the publication of the book called Essays and Reviews, there are four distinct ways, as instanced below, in which faithful men may discharge the duty of assisting their brethren to meet and to overcome it. In the case of a Church not national, the four ways would be resolved into three, because the second would be merged in the first. That the trial is a heavy one, and calling for every assistance which can be supplied need not be argued. The temptation Which the book suggests and aggravates, is one which assails men at that particular point which is at all times the Weakest point of their nature, the pride of reason; and, doubtless, if man's soul be at all times most accessible to the Tempter at this particular point, there are circumstances of the time in Which we live which tend in an especial manner to increase the danger.
