Book Description
The study examined the factors that affect students' academic achievement in Zimbabwe's rural Secondary Schools with Marimasimbe Secondary School (Gokwe South - Midlands Province) taken as a case study. The research adopted a case study methodology and the population sample was drawn from teachers, Form 3 and Form 4 students and parents in the native area. The study used maximum variation sampling for sample selection. Data was gathered through participant-observations, questionnaires, focus group interviews and documents review. The data was analyzed through graphs and simple numbers. The results show that the type of school leadership by the head, career guidance, teacher-pupil ratio, qualified and dedicated teachers as well as discipline and order are the major internal factors affecting students' academic achievement. The identified external factors are family socioeconomic status, school-community relations, distance or proximity to the school and witchcraft practices. Other findings are that boys perform better than girls at ordinary level. The researcher recommends creation of conducive school environment by school heads, taking career guidance more seriously, employment of adequate qualified teachers who are dedicated to their work, maintaining discipline and order by both parents and teachers among others.

Educational Performance of the Poor
Author: Ralph W. Harbison
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 394
Book Description
Education policy of developing nations is often viewed as a choice between equal access for all students and quality of schools. This work proposes that such a dichotomy may be artificial. The research shows that improving the quality of education could lead to efficiency gains, sometimes large enough to offset the costs of such innovations. Using data collected over seven years in rural northeast Brazil, this quantitative assessment of educational performance and school promotion in primary schools uniquely addresses important policy concerns facing developing countries.

Pages : 33
Book Description
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Pedagogy - School Pedagogics, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ), language: English, abstract: This study was carried out in Kabale district to ascertain the factors responsible for poor academic performance in secondary schools. Both purposive and simple random sampling methods were used to select respondents. Both primary data and secondary data was collected and analyzed. A number of studies have found out that there are various factors that are responsible for a poor academic performance in secondary schools. However, there is a gap in studies of low academic performance in Kabale district. Academic performance is undoubtedly a research drive at the heart of educators, teachers, psychologists, policy makers, parents and guardians, social workers etc. in their attempts to investigate what determines academic outcomes of learners, they have come up with more questions than answers. In recent, prior literature has shown that learning outcomes (academic achievement and academic performance) have been determined by such variables as family, schools, society and motivational factors. National governments have tried to invest heavily in education in order to improve accessibility and quality of education both the secondary and primary schools. They have however not taken university education as a priority. The upper secondary education however has received little attention by governments and donor agencies a factor that could have contributed to the poor academic performance in secondary schools. The quality of education at primary section depends on the quality of teachers and their competence, their capacity the teaching and learning process and is widely recognized that the quality of teachers and teaching lies at the heart of all schooling systems intending to offer quality education.
