Book Description
This paper assessed the factors influencing farmers,Äô choice to participate in selling goats and the extent of goat commercialization in Zululand district of Kwa-Zulu Natal Province in South Africa. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to 175 selected goat farmers in five local municipalities within Zululand district. A Probit model was used to estimate the factors affecting farmers,Äô choice to commercialize while Tobit regression model was used to analyze the factors affecting the extent of commercialization. The Probit results show that the factors that positively and significantly affect farmers,Äô choice to commercialize are gender, education level, quantity of goats, and type of marketing channel. The Tobit results revealed that factors that have a positive significant effect on commercialization are gender, level of education, experience in goat farming, and time of the year. The paper recommends that government support programs should be promoted to achieve high goat production and establishment of formal marketing goat sector to promote commercialization. Furthermore, information about goat nutritional attributes must be effectively shared with the society to change the negative stigma towards goats thus increasing the demand for goat and goat products, thus increasing farmers,Äô market participation and promoting commercialization.

Book Description
Goat science covers quite a wide range and varieties of topics, from genetics and breeding, via nutrition, production systems, reproduction, milk and meat production, animal health and parasitism, etc., up to the effects of goat products on human health. In this book, several parts of them are presented within 18 different chapters. Molecular genetics and genetic improvement of goats are the new approaches of goat development. Several factors affect the passage rate of digesta in goats, but for diet properties, goats are similar to other ruminants. Iodine deficiency in goats could be dangerous. Assisted reproduction techniques have similar importance in goats like in other ruminants. Milk and meat production traits of goats are almost equally important and have significant positive impacts on human health. Many factors affect the health of goats, heat stress being of increasing importance. Production systems could modify all of the abovementioned characteristics of goats.

Book Description
Goats are an important source of livelihood for smallholder farmers domiciled in arid areas of Zimbabwe. Economic reforms such as liberalization of markets have opened up avenues for smallholder goat farmers to produce more diverse products and participate in high-end and rewarding markets. These markets include export and processing linked marketing channels. The main objective of the paper was to explore the factors affecting smallholder farmers' involvement in goat marketing and the intensity of goat sales in Bikita district. A representative sample of 392 goat farmers was proportionately selected from 5 wards. The double hurdle model was used to evaluate market participation and market participation intensity decisions guided by the probit model and censored tobit model respectively. Results show that the decision to participate in goat marketing was exclusively influenced by experience in goat farming while intensity of goat marketing was exclusively influenced by household labour, access to other sources of information and the market prices. Age of household head, access to credit and affiliation to marketing associations influences both decisions. These include the The study recommends that, central government and private sector companies should encourage and support more farmers to affiliate into marketing associations. This is a key strategy that can be used to promote market information dissemination among goat value chain stakeholders. Formation of marketing hubs can also increase goat marketing participation thorough increased access to decentralised marketing points. Opening up credit lines can also ultimately result in farmers commercially producing goats as they increase their herds.

Book Description
The objectives of this study are to assess the role of small ruminants (sheep and goats) in the food production systems of developing countries, examine their advantages and disadvantages, analyze the constraints limiting their further contribution to the welfare of small farm/low income rural producers, prescribe measures for overcoming these constraints, and make recommendations related to potential donor involvement in support of the development of sheep and goat production. Small ruminants are viewed as an integral, but not dominant component of complex agricultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on sheep and goats in mixed herds grazing dry rangelands and in small mixed farm systems in medium to high rainfall areas. An analysis of major constraints -- ecological, biological, policy, and socio-economic -- leads to recommendations on the need for a balanced production system approach for research, training and development programs, and for a combination of support activities such as herd health programs, and formulation of favorable credit, marketing and pricing policies for small ruminants and their products.
