Introduction. En France, l'accès à l'interruption volontaire de grossesse (IVG) a été facilité par différentes lois. Malgré ces mesures et la diversité des moyens mis en place pour promouvoir les contraceptifs, le taux d'IVG reste stable. Certains facteurs conditionnent la décision d'interrompre ou non une grossesse. Objectif. Explorer les différents facteurs amenant les femmes à avoir recours à une IVG et leur vécu. Méthode. Étude qualitative auprès de 17 femmes âgées de 16 à 40 ans ayant eu recours à une IVG dans la Loire (France). Résultats. Un tiers des participantes n'utilisait pas de contraception. La majorité utilisait le préservatif et/ou calculait la date d'ovulation, par refus de contraception hormonale ou du risque d'oubli. La contraception d'urgence a été évoquée une seule fois. Chez les plus jeunes, la poursuite des études, la non-implication du géniteur, les tabous familiaux conditionnent la décision. Les femmes déjà mères ne souhaitaient pas d'autre enfant. Le vécu de l'IVG a été satisfaisant malgré l'anxiété liée aux délais longs ou urgents de la prise en charge et aux risques liés à la procédure (douleurs, complications médicales). Conclusion. Des craintes liées à une vision négative des contraceptifs hormonaux, un appui sur des outils de calcul de date d'ovulation peu fiables, une méconnaissance de la fertilité et de la contraception d'urgence peuvent expliquer la survenue d'une grossesse non désirée. La diffusion d'informations validées sur la contraception doit être poursuivie par tous les canaux possibles.
