Book Description
Interest in the fabrication of nano-optical structures has increased dramatically in recent years, due to advances in lithographic resolution. In particular, metallic nanostructures are of interest because of their ability to concentrate light to well below the diffraction limit. Such structures have many potential applications, including nanoscale photonics, quantum information processing and single molecule detection/imaging. In the case of quantum computing and quantum communication, plasmon-based metal nanostructures offer the promise of scalable devices. This is because the small optical mode volumes of such structures give the large atom-photon coupling needed to interface solid-state quantum bits (qubits) to photons. The main focus of this dissertation is on fabrication and testing of surface plasmon-based metal nanostructures that can be used as optical wires for effciently collecting and directing an isolated atom or molecule's emission. In this work, Ag waveguides having 100nm x 50nm and 50nm x 50nm cross sections have been fabricated ranging from 5[micron] to 16[micron] in length. Different types of coupling structures have also been fabricated to allow in-coupling and out-coupling of free space light into and out of the nanometric waveguides. The design of waveguides and couplers have been accomplished using a commercial finite difference in time domain (FDTD) software. Different nanofabrication techniques and methods have been investigated leading to robust and reliable process conditions suitable for very high aspect ratio fabrication of metal structures. Detailed testing and characterization of the plasmon based metal waveguides and couplers have also been carried out. Test results have revealed effective surface plasmon propagation range. 0.5dB/[micron] and 0.07dB/[micron] transmission losses have been found for 100nm and 50nm wide waveguides respectively, which correspond to 1/e propagation lengths of 9[micron] and 60[micron]. Input coupling effciency was found to be 2% and output coupling effciency was found to be 35%. The fabrication and testing results presented provide critical demonstrations to establish the feasibility of nanophotonic integrated circuits, scalable quantum information processing devices, as well as other devices, such as single molecule detectors and imaging systems.

Book Description
The contributions in this volume were presented at a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Italy, 4-19 July 2013. Many aspects of important research into nanophotonics, plasmonics, semiconductor materials and devices, instrumentation for bio sensing to name just a few, are covered in depth in this volume. The growing connection between optics and electronics, due to the increasing important role plaid by semiconductor materials and devices, find their expression in the term photonics, which also reflects the importance of the photon aspect of light in the description of the performance of several optical systems. Nano-structures have unique capabilities that allow the enhanced performance of processes of interest in optical and photonic devices. In particular these structures permit the nanoscale manipulation of photons, electrons and atoms; they represent a very hot topic of research and are relevant to many devices and applications. The various subjects bridge over the disciplines of physics, biology and chemistry, making this volume of interest to people working in these fields. The emphasis is on the principles behind each technique and on examining the full potential of each technique.

Book Description
In the 1990s, optical technology and photonics industry developed fast, but further progress became difficult due to a fundamental limit of light known as the diffraction limit. This limit could be overcome using the novel technology of nano-optics or nanophotonics in which the size of the electromagnetic field is decreased down to the nanoscale and is used as a carrier for signal transmission, processing, and fabrication. Such a decrease beyond the diffraction limit is possible by using optical near-fields. The true nature of nano-optics and nanophotonics involves not only their abilities to meet the above requirements but also their abilities to realize qualitative innovations in photonic devices, fabrication techniques, energy conversion and information processing systems. The objective of this work is to review the innovations of optical science and technology by nano-optics and nanophotonics. While in conventional optical science and technology, light and matter are discussed separately, in nano-optics and nanophotonics, light and matter have to be regarded as being coupled to each other, and the energy flow between nanoparticles is bidirectional. This means that nano-optics and nanophotonics have to be regarded as a technology fusing optical fields and matter. This unique work reviews and covers the most recent topics of nano-optics, applications to device operations, fabrication techniques, energy conversion, information processing, architectures and algorithms. Each chapter is written by the leading scientists in the relevant field. Thus, this work will provide high-quality scientific and technical information to scientists, engineers, and graduate students who are and will be engaged in R&D of nano-optics and nanophotonics. Especially, the topics to be covered by this work will be popularly used by the engineers in the rapidly growing market of the optical energy conversion.

Book Description
Optics and photonics technologies are ubiquitous: they are responsible for the displays on smart phones and computing devices, optical fiber that carries the information in the internet, advanced precision manufacturing, enhanced defense capabilities, and a plethora of medical diagnostics tools. The opportunities arising from optics and photonics offer the potential for even greater societal impact in the next few decades, including solar power generation and new efficient lighting that could transform the nation's energy landscape and new optical capabilities that will be essential to support the continued exponential growth of the Internet. As described in the National Research Council report Optics and Photonics: Essential Technologies for our Nation, it is critical for the United States to take advantage of these emerging optical technologies for creating new industries and generating job growth. The report assesses the current state of optical science and engineering in the United States and abroad-including market trends, workforce needs, and the impact of photonics on the national economy. It identifies the technological opportunities that have arisen from recent advances in, and applications of, optical science and engineering. The report also calls for improved management of U.S. public and private research and development resources, emphasizing the need for public policy that encourages adoption of a portfolio approach to investing in the wide and diverse opportunities now available within photonics. Optics and Photonics: Essential Technologies for our Nation is a useful overview not only for policymakers, such as decision-makers at relevant Federal agencies on the current state of optics and photonics research and applications but also for individuals seeking a broad understanding of the fields of optics and photonics in many arenas.
