Louis XVI and the French Revolution, 1789–1792
Author: Ambrogio A. Caiani
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139789732
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
The experience, and failure, of Louis XVI's short-lived constitutional monarchy of 1789–92 deeply influenced the politics and course of the French Revolution. The dramatic breakdown of the political settlement of 1789 steered the French state into the decidedly stormy waters of political terror and warfare on an almost global scale. This book explores how the symbolic and political practices which underpinned traditional Bourbon kingship ultimately succumbed to the radical challenge posed by the Revolution's new 'proto-republican' culture. While most previous studies have focused on Louis XVI's real and imagined foreign counterrevolutionary plots, Ambrogio A. Caiani examines the king's hitherto neglected domestic activities in Paris. Drawing on previously unexplored archival source material, Caiani provides an alternative reading of Louis XVI in this period, arguing that the monarch's symbolic behaviour and the organisation of his daily activities and personal household were essential factors in the people's increasing alienation from the newly established constitutional monarchy.

Caste, Class and Profession in Old Regime France
Author: David D. Bien
Publisher: Centre for French History and Culture of University of St. Andrews
ISBN: 9781907548024
Category : France
Languages : en
Pages : 102
Book Description
First published in French in 1974, David D. Bien's essay on the nature of nobility in old regime France pivoted around the 1781 "Ségur regulation" that required four generations of nobility for most officers entering the army. Once seen as a classic manifestation of the so-called "aristocratic reaction" against commoners, the loi Ségur, in Bien's deft analysis, instead emerges as a telling sign of tensions within an increasingly divided nobility. While exploding crude myths about class conflict and its causative role in the Revolution, Bien mounts a strong case for viewing eighteenth-century social tensions as the product of professional identity as much as social class. This study is presented here for the first time in English with a short preface by Rafe Blaufarb, and a wide-ranging introduction by Jay M. Smith that places Bien's work in the wider context of historical thinking over the past half-century on the origins of the French Revolution.

The Conseil Privé and the Parlements in the Age of Louis XIV
Author: Albert N. Hamscher
Publisher: American Philosophical Society
ISBN: 9780871697721
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
This vol., while encompassing the entire reign of Louis XIV & all the parlements of the realm, has the narrow focus of investigating the impact of royal policy on the judicial authority of the parlements as revealed in their relations with the king's councils, notably the one that specialized in judicial affairs, the Conseil Prive. This is above all a study of the evolution of conciliar jurisprudence & judicial procedure, as much an exercise in what the French call "l'histoire du droit" as an opportunity to observe in a novel way the resolution of some of the most pressing political problems in the Age of Louis XIV. But the overall aim is to understand the practical consequences of royal absolutism for the kingdom's highest judicial institutions.

Spanish Books in the Europe of the Enlightenment (Paris and London)
Author: Nicolás Bas Martín
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004359524
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 375
Book Description
In Spanish Books in the Europe of the Enlightenment (Paris and London) Nicolás Bas examines the image of Spain in eighteenth-century Europe, and in Paris and London in particular. His material has been scoured from an exhaustive interrogation of the records of the book trade. He refers to booksellers’ catalogues, private collections, auctions, and other sources of information in order to reconstruct the country’s cultural image. Rarely have these sources been searched for Spanish books, and never have they been as exhaustively exploited as they are in Bas’ book. Both England and France were conversant with some very negative ideas about Spain. The Black Legend, dating back to the sixteenth century, condemned Spain as repressive and priest-ridden. Bas shows however, that an alternative, more sympathetic, vision ran parallel with these negative views. His bibliographical approach brings to light the Spanish books that were bought, sold and ultimately read. The impression thus obtained is likely to help us understand not only Spain’s past, but also something of its present.

Year of Sorrows
Author: W. Gregory Monahan
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
"Year of Sorrows draws upon an extensive array of archival sources to chronicle the famine crisis of 1709 in Lyon and its surrounding provinces." "Combining a traditional narrative of human struggle and desperate improvisation with contemporary analysis, Monahan takes his readers from the court of Versailles through the cities of Lyon into the hovels of French peasants who resisted the city's demand for their grain. Monahan goes on to analyze the political, social, economic, and demographic impact of the famine on an early modern city and explores the many conflicts created by the crisis between city and monarchy, city and countryside, and among various groups within Lyon. According to Monahan, the famine of 1709 serves as a prism to refract the interactions between royal finances and food shortages, between elites and the powerless, and between competing factions and power centers, and redefines the nature of the "absolute" monarchy of the Sun King." "This dynamic study of human struggle and its political and social dimensions sheds new light on a host of issues and problems in France before the Revolution and on the role that such crises have played in human history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Order of Minims in Seventeenth-Century France
Author: P.J.S. Whitmore
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401034915
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 381
Book Description
Thinking of the text from the Dies frae (S. Matthew, XXV, 40). It is also probable that this other Saint Francis, partly out of admiration for his illustrious compatriot of Assisi and partly from a compelling urge to be superlative in all things, chose the title in opposition to the Franciscans, the Fratres Minori, l who had previously adopted this style taken from Saint Matthew, XXIII, 8. The title "Minim" was confirmed in these words" ... eosque Eremitos Ordinis Minimorum Fratrum Eremitarum F. Francesci de Paula in posterum nuncupari," taken from the Papal Bull, Meritis religiosae vitae, of 26 February, 1493. The earliest reference to the Order in France is in a fragment preserved in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal called, La regle et vie de Frere Franfois, pauvre et humble hermite de Paule, laquelle donne a tous ses 2 freres voulant entrer et vivre en son ordre. The dating of this manuscript should be accepted with considerable reserve; it bears a clearly legible "1474," although it seems most unlikely that any reference to an Order occurred before the Bull of 1493 or that any Rule appeared in French before the Founder's visit to Louis XI in 1483. 3 The fame of Francis and his reputation as a "guerisseur" had reached the French court where Louis XI was sick and dying; the King summoned him to the chateau of Le Plessis-Ies-Tours, but it required the intervention of the Pope to make the hermit undertake the journey
