The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between executive servant leadership and job satisfaction in human service nonprofit organizations in southwest Virginia. The problem to be addressed was the leadership deficit in nonprofit organizations and the ability of nonprofit leaders to motivate employees to perform. This study was significant because the leadership is a critical success factor for nonprofit organizations, however, the nonprofit sector is confronting a situation of leadership deficit. There is limited research on effective leadership strategies for nonprofit organizations. This study serves as new research for effective leadership practices and their relationship to employee motivation for nonprofit organizations. The researcher applied a self-reporting questionnaire framework to measure the independent and dependent variables. The Job Satisfaction Survey was used to measure the dependent variable of employee job satisfaction and the Servant Organizational Leadership Assessment was used to measure the independent variable of servant leadership present in an organization. A random sample of 83 full time employees of human service nonprofit organizations in southwest Virginia participated in the study. The results of this study found a moderate-strong positive statistically significant relationship between servant leadership present in an organization and employee job satisfaction. The results of this study contribute to nonprofit leadership practices as the results indicate servant leadership does lead to increased employee job satisfaction and nonprofit leaders should seek to understand how implementing servant leadership practices into their own leadership will benefit their employees. Biblically, just as man is created with a purpose to serve others through Jesus Christ, business leaders also exist with a purpose to serve.

Fifty people participated in the study across several agencies and non-profits in the Memphis area. The results were collected through online surveys and individual structured interviews. Several different Statistical tests and analytical measures were used to determine significance. The results reflected a relationship between leadership style and job performance that was strong and significant. Most importantly, the study showed that a relationship is necessary between employee and management to ensure high performance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the ways organizations function. Social distancing has altered the ways organizations traditionally operated and caused significant challenges for employees, leading to employee turnover. Employee turnover is important to address because high attrition can extensively affect companies, directly and indirectly, resulting in increased hiring, training cost, lost production, reduced profits, and overall lower employee morale. Grounded in Bass’s model of transformation leadership, the purpose of this mixed-methods grounded theory study using an integration of quantitative and qualitative research was to explore the existence of an association between transformational leadership and employee job satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic era in a local government organization in Washington state. There were six research questions that directed the study around the dimensions of transformational leadership. Through a purposeful sampling technique, 20 employees from a division in this government organization participated in this study. Data were collected through two surveys in Survey Monkey, which were transferred to SPSS, and through open-ended interviews, done through Zoom Video Communications Inc., transcribed, and transferred to NVivo software for data analysis and interpretation. Seven themes emerged from the analysis: support, communication, leadership, telework, empowerment, safety, and trust. The study was also triangulated, which demonstrated the study’s validity between the quantitative and qualitative data. The general results of this study showed a statistically significant association between transformational leadership and employee satisfaction. While the literature review and data analysis present a convincing case for transformational leadership and employee satisfaction in general, elements of intellectual stimulation and idealized influence (behaviors) were not significant. This indicated that not all the dimensions of transformational leadership correlated with improving employee job satisfaction which appears to be an anomaly of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The dissertation examines the applicability of transformational and transactional leadership style to personal social service organizations. The Executive Directors and their subordinates from 92 Children's Aid Societies and Children's Mental Health Centres in Ontario participated in the study. The results indicate significant positive relationships between transformational leadership (TFL) and job satisfaction, commitment, leader effectiveness, and satisfaction with the leader. While not as robust, significant negative relationships were found between transactional leadership (TAL) and job satisfaction, commitment, leader effectiveness, and satisfaction with the leader. It is pointed out that TAL and TFL are derived by averaging eight discrete factors into two sources. This procedure allows for a comprehensive analysis of TFL and TAL leadership, but results in the loss of information regarding the relative importance of the individual factors making up the score. The dissertation concludes with suggesting that TFL and TAL are useful factors in examining leadership in personal social service organizations. However, while the TAL concept is relevant as an appropriate leadership style, the adequacy of Bass' Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire used to measure TAL is questioned. This research reflects that TAL and TFL is perceived as a bipolar concept rather than an independent one as suggested by Bass (1985). Areas for future research are suggested including the role of personal values in TFL; the measurement of TAL; the relevance of TAL and TFL to more direct service positions; and management training programmes to promote the development of TFL.
