The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of female student veterans with disabilities entering higher education during reintegration in order to improve programs, services, and support available to female student veterans with disabilities. A screening questionnaire, interviews, a focus group, and journals were used to collect data. Participants consisted of 11 female student veterans with disabilities who were purposively selected using criterion, snowball, and maximum variation sampling. The central research question was: What are the transition experiences of female student veterans with disabilities entering college during reintegration into society? Four sub-questions were also addressed. Data analyses were conducted using Moustakas' (1994) recommendations of a transcendental phenomenological study, and five themes were identified. Textural and structural descriptions were written and integrated into the composite description to reveal the essence of participants' experiences. Findings served to inform post-secondary institutions of the diverse needs of female student veterans with disabilities so they can better serve them, increase student veterans' perseverance and academic success, and provide a smoother reintegration for all student veterans with disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the transition of student veterans with disabilities from the combat theater in to higher education. More specifically, the researcher delved in to the lived experiences of student veterans with disabilities as they transitioned from the combat theater to the higher education community. The factors that affected the transition experience of these students were explored. The study also investigated these student veterans' beliefs, attitudes and needs regarding their inclusion in the higher education community. Finally, an examination of the protections of federal legislation for student veterans with disabilities, transitioning of veterans, prevalence of traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and polytrauma among returning combat veterans and financial implications of the new GI Bill and other complexities associated with this group of students also informed this study. Semi-structured interviews with student veterans in North Carolina colleges and community colleges were completed in a purposeful sample, with additional snowball sampling in a few instances. Data analysis was conducted to determine themes common across interviews and to understand the phenomenon experienced by this group of students. Important conclusions from this study included the effect of injuries on lived experience, the role of the GI Bill, complicated relations with the VA hospital system, and multiple barriers to inclusion. Recommendations for additional areas of research and implications for the future were given.

They are highly motivated to serve others and value education. Student veterans may however face significant challenges. Student veterans have typically been out of high school for some time, where they may have earned average grades. Many are married with children and more than a few are single parents. They are approximately 20% less likely than non-veterans to attain a bachelor degree and slightly more likely to drop out of higher education without attaining a degree of any sort. Deployments extend their time to degree, and multiple deployments can significantly delay graduation.The challenges associated with transitioning from the military into higher education are heightened when a student has a disability – physical, psychological, or emotional. As the numbers of veterans on campus increase as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the reauthorization of the GI Bill, higher education is called to more keenly understand and support this population (Baechtold & De Sawal, 2009). Moreover, in light of the growing population of female student veterans, this timely study adds to the inappropriately small body of knowledge of female military veterans' experiences in higher education and to conceptualize this population's experiences with regard to college choice, transition to campus, institutional engagement, and overall persistence to degree. By utilizing a transitional theory framework, this study advances research on the particularly complex educational trajectories of female student veterans (Hamrick & Rumann, 2011). By employing a phenomenological approach, this study brings a close examination of the experiences as described by participants, providing for a distillation of respondents' experiences into a composite description of their experiences, which can be used to inform faculty, staff, and administration about this growing population. Lastly, by examining the experiences of female student veterans at a four-year, flagship, public research university, this study augments our understanding about a worrisome trend: female student veterans select four-year, research institutions less frequently than their male peers and nonveteran women, despite the presence of educational benefits provided by military service and the GI Bill, the robust veteran student services more often found at four-year institutions, and the long-term personal economic benefits that come from completing a four-year degree. Female student veteran experiences served as a major source of data and research was gathered in the form of a demographic survey, individual interviews, and small focus groups consisting of undergraduate female student veterans at The University of Texas at Austin. Outcomes are manifold and include the conceptualization of the unique experiences of female student veterans at the university as well as support for future policy relating to female student veterans' educational success.
