Excavations at Tocra, 1963-1965: The archaic deposits I
Author: John Boardman
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Classical antiquities
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
Presents findings at archaeological excavations at the ancient settlement of Tocra, now located on the seacoast of Libya. "This volume contains a full account of the excavations 1963-5, and a publication of the Archaic finds of 1963 and 1964. Knowledge of the 1965 finds has been used in this work but the Archaic finds of that year, as well as all the Classical and Roman material from the excavation, are reserved for a later publication after further study. In the interests of speedy publication the aim here has been to give full descriptions and illustration (except of duplicates) with that minimum of discussion and comparanda which the authors believe to be also an optimum in excavation reports of this type." (preface).

Excavations at the Ancient Synagogue of Gush Ḥalav
Author: Eric M. Meyers
Publisher: Eisenbrauns
ISBN: 9780931464591
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
During 1977 and 1978 the Meiron Excavation Project moved north from its excavations at Khirbet Shema and Meiron, excavating at the site of the synagogue at Gush Halav. With only very limited areas available for excavation, the team nevertheless was able to extract significant information for the history of Galilean synagogues. The synagogue here had a unique form, with spatial elements that have few if any parallels elsewhere. This publication will thus be of great importance for the history of Galilee in the first millennium C.E. and for the development of synagogue architecture and its relationship to the culture of the region in general.

Excavations at Pylos in Elis
Author: John E. Coleman
Publisher: ASCSA
ISBN: 9780876615218
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
When the site of Elean Pylos was threatened by the construction of a dam in 1968, a team from the University of Colorado moved in to salvage as much information as possible about the ancient town before it was submerged. This report is divided chronologically: Middle Helladic, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Roman, Byzantine, and Frankish. Each chapter consists of a brief description of the remains in the field, followed by a catalogue of the finds. While earlier finds are mainly of wells, the Classical settlement was the size of a large village providing everyday finds of bronze, lead, iron, and pottery. Some fragments of terracotta figurines and amber suggest a certain amount of wealth, but the primary character of the whole site is agricultural. Roman and Frankish remains are primarily funerary.

Author: Arcadia Kocybala
Publisher: UPenn Museum of Archaeology
ISBN: 9780924171451
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
Corinthian pottery represents the largest percentage of all the imported archaic Greek wares found at the sanctury of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene in Libya. With its markedly broad range of types and quality, it provides insight into both the early history of the sanctuary and the nature of the export wares of this major Greek pottery center. In addition, the pottery provides some interesting new material for Corinthian vase painting in general, and adds to our knowledge of certain vase painters in particular.
