An analysis of the free electron laser (FEL) oscillator start-up problem in the linear regime is presented. The model is spatially one dimensional, though many important three dimensional effects are included heuristically. The electron beam consists of pulses of arbitrary shape separated by approximately twice the radiation transit time. The small gain/pass approximation is employed in deriving an energy rate equation, which described the evolution of the radiation pulses within the resonator. The wiggler field is assumed to occupy a portion of the finite Q resonator. In the energy rate equation, the spontaneous (incoherent) radiation term is represented by a source matrix, while the stimulated (coherent) radiation term is represented by a gain matrix. The effect of small variations in the mirror separation are investigated in the context of laser lethargy. Our analysis suggests possible methods which would substantially shorten the start-up times in FEL oscillators. Finally, our results are compared with the FEL oscillator experiments performed at Stanford University. (author).

At the time that we decided to begin work on this book, several other volumes on the free-electron laser had either been published or were in press. The earliest work of which we were aware was published in 1985 by Dr T. C. Marshall of Columbia University [1]. This book dealt with the full range of research on free-electron lasers, including an overview of the extant experiments. However, the field has matured a great deal since that time and, in our judgement, the time was ripe for a more extensive work which includes the most recent advances in the field. The fundamental work in this field has largely been approached from two distinct and, unfortunately, separate viewpoints. On the one hand, free-electron lasers at sub-millimetre and longer wavelengths driven by low-energy and high-current electron beams have been pursued by the plasma physics and microwave tube communities. This work has confined itself largely to the high-gain regimes in which collective effects may play an important role. On the other hand, short-wavelength free-electron lasers in the infrared and optical regimes have been pursued by the accelerator and laser physics community. Due to the high-energy and low-current electron beams appropriate to this spectral range, these experiments have operated largely in the low-gain single-particle regimes. The development of lasers in which the active medium is a relativistic stream of free electrons has recently evoked much interest. The potential advantages of such free electron lasers include, among other things, continuous frequency tunability, very high power of operations and high efficiency. The free electron laser is characterized by a pump field; for example, a spatially periodic magnetic field, which scatters from a relativistic electron beam. The scattered radiation has a wavelength much smaller than the pump wavelength depending on the electron beam energy. We present a general self-consistent non-linear theory of the free electron laser process. The non-linear formulation of the temporal steady state free electron laser problem results in a set of coupled differential equations governing the spatial evolution of the amplitudes and wavelength of the radiation and space charge fields. These equations are readily solved numerically since the amplitude and wavelength vary on a spatial scale which is comparable to a growth length of the output radiation. A number of numerical/analytical illustrations are presented ranging from the optical to the submillimeter wavelength regime. Our non-linear formulation in the linear regime is compared with linear theory and agreement is found to be excellent. Analytical expressions for the saturated efficiency and radiation amplitude are also shown to be in very good agreement with out non-linear numerical solutions. Efficiency curves are obtained for both the optical and submillimeter FEL examples with fixed magnetic pump parameters. We show that these intrinsic efficiencies can be greatly enhanced by appropriately contouring the magnetic pump period.
