Teach the Free Man
Author: Peter Nathaniel Malae
Publisher: Ohio University Press
ISBN: 0804010986
Category : Local author
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
The twelve stories in Teach the Free Man mark the impressive debut of Peter Nathaniel Malae. The subject of incarceration thematically links the stories, yet their range extends beyond the prison's barbed wire and iron bars. Avoiding sensationalism, Malae exposes the heart and soul in those dark, seemingly inaccessible corridors of the human experience. The stories, often raw and startlingly honest, are distinguished by the colloquial voices of California's prison inmates, who, despite their physical and cultural isolation, confront dilemmas with which we can all identify: the choice to show courage against peer pressure; the search for individual rights within a bureaucracy; and the desperate desire for honor in the face of great sacrifice. These stories present polished and poetic examples of finding something redemptive in the least among us. The book's epigraph by W. H. Auden, from which the book takes its title, exemplifies the spirit of these dynamic stories: In the deserts of the heart Let the healing fountain start. In the prison of his days Teach the free man how to praise.

Psycho Club
Author: Dana Beth Stenholtz
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1465322825
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 235
Book Description
A short article seen in the Kohler Lake Daily on 30 May 1993: Below is the text version of a pamphlet written by the late Brent Mason, who was a twice-published author and youth pastor at Church of the Open Door in Kohler Lake, Colorado. Mason, 28, was found murdered in his home on the 25th of May, as was his wife, Gloria (Fitzgerald) Mason. Family and friends of the Masons believe that their deaths are the direct result of his having written this pamphlet. Police investigators say no proof exists and have closed the case due to lack of evidence. Did the Psycho Club murder Brent Mason? Judge for yourself: BEWARE! THE PSYCHO CLUB IS A REAL AND LOCAL DANGER! First of all, I would like the citizens of Kohler Lake to understand that I am not writing this pamphlet to scare you. I am writing this pamphlet to inform you. It is my sincere hope and prayer that you will read these words, take them to heart, and become better-informed citizens of this fine city. For the past twelve years, a man by the name of Nathan Shipchandler has lived in our city. He came as a young man, 15 years old, new to the community. I, too, was 15. I met Nathan my sophomore year in high school. I befriended him. Little did I know that he already had a wrap sheet a mile long, and that he had no intentions of reforming, despite his many stays in juvenile detention centers and rehabilitation centers in surrounding towns and in nearby Denver. Nathan formed a club that year, and I joined it. I had no idea how seriously he took this club, until it was almost too late. The name of Nathan Shipchandlers club? The Psycho Club. It sounds almost silly, doesnt it? Like something a couple of bored teenage kids would create to make themselves sound more tough than they really were, more tough than they felt. It sounds like the kind of club loners might want to join. Outcasts. Kids who werent accepted anywhere else could probably find a safe haven in a club called the Psycho Club. And some did. Including myself. Nathan, my best friend (who will remain unnamed), and myself were the original three members. We thought we were the greatest, the coolest, the baddest guys around. The problem is, Nathans true character began to show. It wasnt long until he revealed the darker side of his personality. He said one night, over beer and cigarettes, that we should make a rule for initiation. Fine, I thought. Most clubs have a hazing of some sort. Everyone knew that. But Nathans rule was not the normal kind of rule, not in my mind. In order to be a member of the Psycho Club, you had to kill someone. A human being, in cold blood. And Nathan chose the victim. He was, after all, the leader. And this was his idea. I balked at it. I watched, sickened, as Nathan and the other few members began making plans. I went to Nathan, and I told him I wanted out. At first, he refused. No one leaves the Club, he said. I promised to never share with anyone the new initiation rule. I swore by my life. Reluctantly, he let me go. Twelve years of guilt, heavily weighing on my shoulders, has led me to write this pamphlet. I dont know where Nathan Shipchandler is. I dont know for certain that hes still in Kohler Lake, but my instincts tell me that he is. After last weeks bomb threat at the local nursing home, I am convinced that the Psycho Club is thriving in this town. But I cant prove it. I cant show you where the members of the Club are. I havent seen or heard from Nathan Shipchandler in over nine years. I never want to see him again, but I can no longer ignore the fact that he exists, and exists nearby. Please, I beg you, watch yourselves. Take bomb threats seriously. Lock your doors at night. Remind your children to not talk with strangers. Keep your eyes open. And, most of all, pray for the safety of your family, yourself, this city. Because the Psycho Club

Publisher: University of Missouri Press
ISBN: 0826274633
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 455
Book Description
George S. Patton Jr. lived an exciting life in war and peace, but he is best remembered for his World War II battlefield exploits. Patton’s War: An American General’s Combat Leadership: November 1942–July 1944, the first of three volumes, follows the general from the beaches of Morocco to the fields of France, right before the birth of Third Army on the continent. In highly engaging fashion, Kevin Hymel uncovers new facts and challenges long-held beliefs about the mercurial Patton, not only examining his relationships with his superiors and fellow generals and colonels, but also with the soldiers of all ranks whom he led. Using new sources unavailable to previous historians and through extensive research of soldiers’ memoirs and interviews, Hymel adds a new dimension to the telling of Patton’s WWII story.

I Was Born Twice
Author: Hasan Almossa
Publisher: Hasan Almossa
ISBN: 109557342X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 239
Book Description
Hasan was reborn at the age of 17 with a noble and peace-driven mission. He was resurrected at a time when hundreds of thousands of Syrians took to the streets en masse in an unprecedented yet courageous protest against the dictatorship regime, demanding freedom and dignity. He transitioned from his happily lived teenage years down the road of dark adulthood, accompanied through every stage by the Syrian war still gnawing at his country to this day.Seeds of the mission were planted when Hassan challenged himself and followed a hidden voice inside, urging him to help the thirsty internally displaced people instead of filling his swimming pool. He was fascinated by the innocent children leaping joyfully into the air at the sight of drinking water, and playing with the droplets of water staining the ground.I Was Born Twice kicks off with a personal journey of Hasan's family hiding a wounded brother fearing for his fate. It later takes us in the hand and walks us slowly down different roads toward raw places brimming with details of the unforgettable lives of sadly forgettable Syrians. Exiled, displaced, and left with echoing memories of destroyed homes and long-lost loved ones, the Syrian peoples still have to bear the brunt of the dire life imposed by the merciless war and its irremediable consequences. The stories of these ordinary people chronicle the suffering of an entire nation, an eternal scream forever knocking on humanity’s door in request of mere solidarity. Each and every story cradled in this book is a piece of history to remain forever etched in our hearts. A reminder of our losses, and of humanity’s mistakes. A testimony of every child killed by the hands of a tyrannical regime. Many of those who appear in I Was Born Twice, escaped from death carrying only their names and their memories. They share these with Hasan, and together they grieve the lost Syrian revolution that was neglected and stolen. Yet, it will come again, as Hasan writes: “Stolen revolutions will come back, no matter how great their thieves”.
