Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... at this time (1916). Mr. Brockman's wife was of German descent and came from one of the oldest and most honored families of Germany. It is appropriate at this time to give a short sketch of a family so well known, and one which has taken such an active part in the development of Piedmont, Virginia. QUISENBERRY. (From Quisenberry Family, by A. C. Quisenberry.) The Quisenberry family of America is descended from Thomas Quisenberry, of England, who settled in Virginia in 1624. He descended from Henrich Von Questenberry, of Cologne, Germany, who became a citizen of England about 1468, and who was of the elder branch of the family of Questenberry at Cologne. Falmes Cologne Berglish Families says: "The Questenbergs or Quisenberrys, a Cologne family, is remarkable, as it rose in three generations from ordinary burghs, to become Barons, Counts, and Imperial Counts." Henrich von Questenberg was the founder of the English branch of the family. He was educated at Cologne University. As a young man he went to England in connection with the Hanseatic interests of his family, and in 1467 married an English girl, Catherine, of Canterbury. For this, which they considered an offense to the family, he was disinherited and expelled from the Hanseatic League. He then became a permanent citizen of England. His son, Augustine Questenberry, married and had four children, as follows: 1. John Questenherrv. of Canterbury, England. 2. Henry, of Leeds, Kent. 3. James, of Leeds, Kent. 4. Thomas. Thomas, the fourth son, was the founder of the American branch of the family. He was born in Bromley, Kent, in 1608, and came to America in 1624. Later he returned to England, where he married a young lady of Canterbury, and with her, returned to Virginia, Westmoreland...

Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Hume Family I write these page after the book has been printed. I am now more familiar with its errors and short comings than any one else. I make an explanation, but no apology. Every person who has contributed matter for those pages has had abundant opportunity to make corrections and changes in the proof; for every such person has had at least two complete proofs sent to him, or her, with instructions for corrections, and all corrections have been made, and the publisher has all such proof to show that such is the case. So that no blame can be attached to the author and publisher for names mis-spelled and dates not corrected. Some have, and still others will, make complaint that their lines are not full and complete. My answer to this is that every line has been printed just as written, and some names have been printed two or three times, because written that often. Some have not complied with my request for their family history, and where this could not be obtained from others it has been omitted. The way has not always been smooth. Some persons - only four I believe - have said and written some very offensive things in a rather ungentlemanly way. One man, a Kansan, became quite indignant and wrote to my secretary. Miss Maude Hume, "that a certain Dr. Hume was trying to faust a fraud upon the unsuspecting people." His grounds for such offense was that I had passed through his State, and had not gone sixty miles out of my way to see him. He who had not contributed five cents to the work and knew nothing of the matter at issue. Another, this time a Texan, lost his equilibrium over $200 subscribed (and returned), and wrote insulting things because I had dared to write the history of a branch of the family - not his own. While a lady - refined and cultured - wrote from Chicago to aense me of grossness and coarse conduct. And fourth and last, my own dear cousin and childhood playfellow. accused me of embezzling his $1.00 sent for a chart.
