Description of a program to develop an ultrasonic inspection design for the nondestructive evaluation of pipeline girth welds made by the mechanized gas metal arch welding process for onshore and offshore pipelines. Vol. 1 describes a design approach using specialized ultrasonic beams chosen to detect specific imperfections in the well-defined regions of the weld and evaluated on simulated and real weld imperfections. Vol. 2 investigates the feasibility of using creeping waves for examination of the cap region, resulting in the development and evaluation of specifications for an experimental creeping wave transducer. Vol. 3 studies the use of the pitch-catch technique to examine the body of the weld, carried out on simulated and real weld defects. Vol. 4 combines the technology developed in the 3 previous reports into the overall inspection of field girth welds using 2 full scale welds in 9.8 mm and 20.6 mm thick pipe.

The report describes the use of the Delta Configuration with a dual oscillating transmitter, a fixed divergent transmitter and a single oscillating divergent transmitter for inspecting steel butt welds. Schlieren studies of the transmitter configuration are included. The Delta Technique is a multi-search unit method of ultrasonic weld inspection. Incident energy is angled into the weld region from two transmitters positioned transverse to the weld length, one on each side of the weld. Flaw information is received with a third search unit positioned directly over the weld. Flaw information is not dependent on preferred flaw orientation, although the receiver must be directly over the defect. (Author).
