Book Description
Rickettsial diseases, which include typhus, spotted fever, trench fever and Q fever, are very serious infectious diseases. Rickettsiae organisms also are of interest to researchers because they have been used as bioweapons, and can serve as agents for bioterrorism. In addition, they are biologically very successful organisms despite their relatively small genome. The papers in this volume are taken from the International Conference on Rickettsiae and Rickettsial Diseases, held in Ljubljana in 2002. They include state-of-the-art discussions of functional genomics, proteomics, epidemiology, ecology and clinical and diagnostic medicine.

Book Description
As research on the human, animal, plant and microbial genomes matures towards descriptive fullness, the need for understanding the proteome has clearly emerged as the next major endeavor of life sciences. Proteomics - the quantitative analysis of all proteins working in a cell at a specific time and at specific conditions - provides deep insight into the highly organized network of expression, modification and degradation of proteins. Compiled in this book are reviews and research articles which describe the recent advances and perspectives of this new field of research. The articles are grouped into the following sections: - Sample Preparation and Solubilization - Developments in Electrophoresis - Detection and Quantitation - Mass Spectrometry - Proteome Data Analysis and Management - Prokayotes and Yeast - Biological Fluids - Eukaryotic Cells and Tissue - Oncology - Plants Proteomics is a new key for the functional analysis of living systems and of equal importance for basic as well as application oriented research.

Book Description
One of the greatest public health achievements during the last century was the reduction of infectious diseases due to public sanitation measures, vaccines and antibiotics. However, in recent years, several new infectious diseases have been identified, and since the appearance of the first penicillin-resistant bacteria, 'old diseases' have reemerged. Volume 8 of Contributions to Microbiology provides an overview of a great variety of bacterial pathogens representative of those groups and discusses the underlying reasons for disease emergence. The various chapters clearly illustrate how changes in society, technology and the environment result in the appearance or spread of bacterial pathogens. Not only bacterial human pathogens, but also bacterial plant pathogens are an issue and serve as an example of how bacteria can adapt very specifically to a particular host environment. As a consequence of this adaptability, the available antimicrobial drugs have become less effective against many infectious agents; the reasons for this are thoroughly discussed in the book. There is an urgent need for the development of new antibiotics. The volume therefore concludes with a chapter on modern approaches which allow a rational design of a new generation of antimicrobial drugs less likely to become ineffective or cause broad-spectrum drug resistance. Emerging Bacterial Pathogens is a valuable resource primarily for scientific and medical professionals as well as for students working in the field of infectious diseases, but will also be of interest to health officials and to the general public interested in public health issues.

Book Description
