Book Description
First published over thirty years ago, War in European History is a brilliantly written survey of the changing ways that war has been waged in Europe, from the Norse invasions to the present day. Far more than a simple military history, the book serves as a succinct and enlightening overview of the development of European society as a whole over the last millennium. From the Norsemen and the world of the medieval knights, through to the industrialized mass warfare of the twentieth century, Michael Howard illuminates the way in which warfare has shaped the history of the Continent, its effect on social and political institutions, and the ways in which technological and social change have in turn shaped the way in which wars are fought. This new edition includes a fully updated further reading and a new final chapter bringing the story into the twenty-first century, including the invasion of Iraq and the so-called 'War against Terror'.

Book Description
'Early Modern' is a term applied to the period which falls between the end of the middle ages and the beginning of the nineteenth century. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to Europe in this period, exploring the changes and transitions involved in the move towards modernity. Nine newly commissioned chapters under the careful editorship of Euan Cameron cover social, political, economic, and cultural perspectives, all contributing to a full and vibrant picture of Europe during this time. The chapters are organized thematically, and consider the evolving European economy and society, the impact of new ideas on religion, and the emergence of modern political attitudes and techniques. The text is complemented with many illustrations throughout to give a feel of the changes in life beyond the raw historical data.

Book Description
Excerpt from An Outline of Recent European History, 1815-1916 This outline with the accompanying references is a revision and enlargement of An Outline for the History of Europe Since 1815 prepared in 1913 for the use of students at the Ohio State University. Like its predecessor it contains much fuller references on the period since 1870 than on the earlier years. Both Hazen's Europe Since 1915 and the second volume of Hayes's Political and Social History of Mod ern Europe have been followed in preparing the outline; and references to both these excellent books have been appended to most of the topics. Students should read one or both of these and at least one of the Additional References under each special topic. The purpose of the outline is not to provide a brief summary of the facts, predigested mental pabulum, as it were; but to provide a scheme of organization, to suggest to the student what he is to look for as he reads, and to teach liim to distinguish between essentials and non essentials. Hence the facts are not usually stated, but the student is left to work them out from his reference readings both in Hazen and Hayes and the Additional References.
