Chacune de ces études a été pour suivie pour elle - mème et sans aucune préoccupation de lui faire vérifier une hypothèse générale. C'est donc sous la contrainte des faits eux-mèmes qu'elles sont venues se grouper autour de deux figures centrales: S. Thomas d'aquin et Descartes. Il nous a semblé de plus en plus évident, à mesure que nous cherchions à définir les conditions historiques au milieu desquelles s'est deve loppée la pensée thomiste, que S. Thomas d'aquin est le premier des philosophes modernes, au sens plein du mot. Non pas qu'il ait créé les principes et inventé l'attitude dont nous vivons; non pas mème que toutes les directions de pensée par lesquelles le XIII siècle prépare l'époque moderne soient concentrées dans son oeuvre; mais parce qu'il est le premier occidental dont la pensée ne se soit asservie ni à un dogme, ni à un système. Situé à sa place dans l'histoire générale, S. Thomas d'aquin continue la spéculation arabe et juive; mais, par rapport à nous, il est vraiment le premier anneau par lequel notre chaine se rattache à celle des philosophies orientales et grecques.
