Le protocole de contrôle d'accès au canal (en anglais mac pour meduim access control) à haut débit, qui doit être capable de garantir la qualité de service (en anglais qos pour quality of service) et d'offrir les débits demandés par les services multimédias, est indispensable pour la nouvelle génération de réseaux locaux et de réseaux métropolitains à support partagé. En même temps, celui-ci doit être compatible au rnis-lb (réseau numérique à intégration de services large bande) qui est basé sur la technique temporelle asynchrone (en anglais atm pour asynchronous transfer mode), pour faciliter l'interconnexion des réseaux entre eux. Les protocoles mac dans les réseaux existants sont destines à supporter, aux débits bas ou moyens, les applications de données sensibles aux pertes mais pas au délai. Les débits demandés par les services multimédias varient de débit bas jusqu'à des débits très hauts. Par conséquent, les protocoles mac ne peuvent pas convenir simultanément à la transmission des trafics multimédias sensibles aux pertes et au délai. Cette thèse est consacrée au développement d'un protocole mac qui peut satisfaire toutes les exigences des services multimédias. Plus précisément, à partir d'une étude sur les caractéristiques du trafic multimédia, nous analysons plusieurs protocoles mac très connus et nous examinerons des techniques de contrôle d'accès au canal, utilisées par des protocoles mac. Nous améliorons l'efficacité du réseau dqdb et nous proposons un nouveau protocole mac pour répondre aux problèmes rencontres. Enfin, nous discuterons des problèmes relatifs à la couche mac au niveau de l'implémentation

Welcome to the fourth IFIP workshop on protocols for high speed networks in Vancouver. This workshop follows three very successful workshops held in Ziirich (1989), Palo Alto (1990) and Stockholm (1993) respectively. We received a large number of papers in response to our call for contributions. This year, forty papers were received of which sixteen were presented as full papers and four were presented as poster papers. Although we received many excellent papers the program committee decided to keep the number of full presentations low in order to accommodate more discussion in keeping with the format of a workshop. Many people have contributed to the success of this workshop including the members of the program committee who, with the additional reviewers, helped make the selection of the papers. We are thankful to all the authors of the papers that were submitted. We also thank several organizations which have contributed financially to this workshop, specially NSERC, ASI, CICSR, UBC, MPR Teltech and Newbridge Networks.

This is the sixth conference in the series which started in 1981 in Paris, followed by conferences held in Zurich (1984), Rio de Janeirio (1987), Barcelona (1991), and Raleigh (1993). The main objective of this IFIP conference series is to provide a platform for the exchange of recent and original contributions in communications systems in the areas of performance analysis, architectures, and applications. There are many exiciting trends and developments in the communications industry, several of which are related to advances in Asynchronous Transfer Mode·(ATM), multimedia services, and high speed protocols. It is commonly believed in the communications industry that ATM represents the next generation of networking. Yet, there are a number of issues that has been worked on in various standards bodies, government and industry research and development labs, and universities towards enabling high speed networks in general and ATM networks in particular. Reflecting these trends, the technical program of the Sixth IFIP W.G. 6.3 Conference on Performance of Computer Networks consists of papers addressing a wide range of technical challenges and proposing various state of the art solutions to a subset of them. Higher Education Leadership and Management have become increasingly important throughout the years due to the complexities that have to be addressed by universities worldwide. This can be seen not only in professionalisation in fields such as faculty management or in areas of quality assurance and internationalisation, but also in the need for exchange and training in academic leadership, such as that of deans or study deans, or of university leadership in general. The Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) is addressing this need in emerging countries by building platforms of exchange and offering training courses. Not only is the programme supporting capacity building of human resources, but it is also specifically focusing on inducing change within the universities, such as introducing new instruments or tools in the area of quality assurance and internationalisation, and addressing specific challenges or setting up new structures in the form of projects in the frame of the training. The ‘National Multiplication Trainings’ Programme under DIES is further addressing the sustainability and multiplication of the DIES Programme, that is, alumni are enabled to implement capacity building in higher education leadership and management in their national context.
