Book Description
LA VOIE COLLOIDALE OXYDE, DEVELOPPEE AU LABORATOIRE POUR LES CATALYSEURS MONOMETALLIQUES, CONSISTE A PREPARER UN SOL D'OXYDE METALLIQUE EN SOLUTION AQUEUSE QUI, APRES DEPOT SUR SUPPORT ET UNE ETAPE D'ACTIVATION, CONDUIT AU CATALYSEUR METALLIQUE SUPPORTE. DANS CETTE THESE, CETTE METHODE EST ADAPTEE A LA PREPARATION DE CATALYSEURS BIMETALLIQUES PD-SN SUPPORTES SUR ALUMINE POUR ESTIMER SON INTERET POUR LE CONTROLE DES PROPRIETES DE LA PHASE BIMETALLIQUE (TAILLE, COMPOSITION ET STRUCTURE). LORS DE L'ETUDE PRELIMINAIRE DES SOLS D'OXYDE D'ETAIN, DES NANOPARTICULES DE SNO 2 DE 2,3 NM ET DE SN 6O 4(OH) 4 DE 25 NM ONT ETE SYNTHETISEES PAR NEUTRALISATION RESPECTIVEMENT POUR L'ETAIN(IV) ET L'ETAIN(II). LE CONTROLE PAR LE PH DE L'AGREGATION DES PARTICULES D'OXYDE STANNIQUE ET D'OXYDE DE PALLADIUM A MONTRE QUE LA SOLUBILITE CROISSANTE DE L'OXYDE FAVORISE LA DESAGREGATION INTEGRALE DES PARTICULES. POUR SYNTHETISER DES SOLS BIMETALLIQUES OXYDES, TROIS STRATEGIES ONT ETE DEFINIES. LA COPOLYMERISATION (FORMATION D'UN NANOSOL D'OXYDE MIXTE PAR CONDENSATION CROISEE DES DEUX METAUX) NE CONDUIT PAS A LA SYNTHESE D'UNE PHASE OXYDE MIXTE PD-SN. LA PRECIPITATION DE SURFACE (NEUTRALISATION DU SECOND METAL EN PRESENCE DU SOL D'OXYDE DU PREMIER) PERMET D'OBTENIR DES NANOPARTICULES DES DEUX OXYDES EN INTERACTION INTIME. L'ADSORPTION (ADSORPTION DU SECOND METAL SUR LE SOL D'OXYDE DU PREMIER) A LIEU DE MANIERE SIGNIFICATIVE LORS DE L'ADSORPTION D'ETAIN SUR UN SOL BASIQUE D'OXYDE DE PALLADIUM (ADSORPTION HYDROLYTIQUE). LA CARACTERISATION ET L'EVALUATION DES PROPRIETES CATALYTIQUES (HYDROGENATION SELECTIVE DU BUTA-1,3-DIENE) DES CATALYSEURS PREPARES PAR DEPOT DES SOLS BIMETALLIQUES MONTRENT QUE LA VOIE COLLOIDALE OXYDE PERMET DE CONTROLER LES PROPRIETES DE LA PHASE BIMETALLIQUE. NOS RESULTATS PERMETTENT PAR AILLEURS D'AFFIRMER QUE LA FORMATION D'ALLIAGE PD-SN ET L'AGREGATION DES PARTICULES METALLIQUES CONTRIBUENT A AUGMENTER LA SELECTIVITE DE LA REACTION.

Book Description
In recent years the need for sustainable process design and alternative reaction routes to reduce industry?s impact on the environment has gained vital importance. The book begins with a general overview of new trends in designing industrial chemical processes which are environmentally friendly and economically feasible. Specific examples written by experts from industry cover the possibilities of running industrial chemical processes in a sustainable manner and provide an up-to-date insight into the main concerns, e.g., the use of renewable raw materials, the use of alternative energy sources in chemical processes, the design of intrinsically safe processes, microreactor and integrated reaction/ separation technologies, process intensification, waste reduction, new catalytic routes and/or solvent and process optimization.

Book Description
Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Book Description
The book deals with novel aspects and perspectives in metal oxide and hybrid material fabrication. The contributions are mainly focused on the search for a new group of advanced materials with designed physicochemical properties, especially an expanded porous structure and defined surface activity. The proposed technological procedures result in an enhanced activity of the synthesized hybrid materials, which is of great importance when considering their potential fields of application. The use of such materials in different technological disciplines, including aspects associated with environmental protection, allows for the verification of the proposed synthesis method. Thus, it can be stated that those aspects are of interdisciplinary character and may be located at the interface of three scientific disciplines—chemistry, materials science, and engineering—as well as environmental protection. Furthermore, the presented scientific scope is in some way an answer to the continuous demand for such types of materials and opens new perspectives for their practical use

Book Description
It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Book Description
Unlike earlier books in this series, this review describes the selection of chemical thermodynamic data for species of two elements, neptunium and plutonium. Although this came about more by circumstance than design, it has allowed for a more consistent approach to chemical interpretation than might have occurred in two separate treatments. It has also drawn attention to cases where the available data do not show expected parallels, and where further work may be useful to confirm or refute apparent differences in the behaviour of neptunium and plutonium.

Book Description
Having safe drinking water is important to all Americans. The Environmental Protection Agency's decision in the summer of 2001 to delay implementing a new, more stringent standard for the maximum allowable level for arsenic in drinking water generated a great deal of criticism and controversy. Ultimately at issue were newer data on arsenic beyond those that had been examined in a 1999 National Research Council report. EPA asked the National Research Council for an evaluation of the new data available. The committee's analyses and conclusions are presented in Arsenic in Drinking Water: 2001 Update. New epidemiological studies are critically evaluated, as are new experimental data that provide information on how and at what level arsenic in drinking water can lead to cancer. The report's findings are consistent with those of the 1999 report that found high risks of cancer at the previous federal standard of 50 parts per billion. In fact, the new report concludes that men and women who consume water containing 3 parts per billion of arsenic daily have about a 1 in 1,000 increased risk of developing bladder or lung cancer during their lifetime.
