Using data from the European Social Survey on most European countries, we look at the relationship between ethnic identity and employment prospects for immigrants from non-European countries. We find that a strong attachment to religion is associated with a lower probability of being employed. When we differentiate between first and second generations of immigrants, our evidence reveals signs of a cultural and economic integration of immigrants in Europe. However, when an extreme ethnic sentiment is preserved, the employment penalty is amplified. Our results also suggest that the strength of a person's ethnic identity and its relationship with employment prospects may depend on the type of integration policy performed in the country where the immigrant lives. In particular, labor-market policies and family-reunion policies seem to facilitate the labor-market access to immigrants coming from non-European countries.

Using a new Canadian dataset, we explore how a direct measure of the depth of ethnic identity at the individual level is correlated with the type of network used to find jobs, and with the quality of jobs actually found. [...] The current paper uses a more direct measure of the depth of a person's ethnic identity which is based on a survey question asking "is your ethnic origin very important to you, somewhat important, not very import or not at all important." We ask how this measure of the depth of ethnic identity correlates with the probability that they find jobs through informal network connections, and with the qu [...] The strategy of correlating a direct measure of the strength of identity with some aspect of behaviour is quite unusual in the economics literature. [...] We find that the strongest correlations between the depth of ethnic identity and the use of informal job-finding networks are for minorities of European origin, and not for nonwhites. [...] In sum, we feel that our direct measure of the depth of ethnic identity is valid on the a priori sociological grounds of correlations with language, immigration generation and religion, and mostly valid on the a priori economic grounds of correlation with choices of voluntary organisations, friendships and neighbours.

Populations of visible ethnic minorities have steadily increased over the past few decades in immigrant-receptive societies. While a complex calculus of push and pull factors has motivated this increase, one of the main impetuses for this migration has been the search for employment, better wages and a higher standard of living. It is therefore not surprising that the educational attainments of the first generation and beyond have achieved convergence with, or exceeded the non-ethnic minority cohort. These outcomes may suggest a greater propensity for visible ethnic minorities to attain labour market success and to fully integrate within the community. However, the narrative derived from statistical analysis, interviews and participant observation suggest an uneasiness boldly to claim this as the most convincing conclusion at this juncture. The Ethnic Penalty argues that a penalty has impeded the occupational success of ethnic minorities during the job search, hiring and promotion process. As a result, ethnic minorities have a lower income, higher unemployment and a general failure to convert their high educational attainments into comparable occupational outcomes. In this context, the book examines whether explanatory factors such as discrimination, an individual's social network, a firm's working culture, and a community's social trust are major contributing reasons behind this apparent penalty, whilst also making suggestions for improving the integration, education delivery, and labour market outcomes of visible ethnic minorities.
