Le dépistage d'un cancer est définit selon l'OMS comme l'application systématique dans une population asymptomatique d'un test visant à repérer les individus présentant des anomalies évocatrices d'un cancer particulier. En ce qui concerne le dépistage par mammographie du cancer du sein, la population cible correspondant aux femmes de 50 à 74 ans, représente 9 millions de personnes en France. Implanté en 2004 sur l'ensemble du territoire, le dépistage organisé, malgré une communication massive autour du sujet, ne rassemble qu'un peu plus de 50% de la population cible depuis sa mise en place. Pourtant, ce dispositif bénéficie de plusieurs avantages par rapport au dépistage sur prescription, à savoir une double lecture des mammographies par deux radiologues expérimentés, une prise en charge à 100% et un suivi adapté. Alors pourquoi le dépistage organisé ne rencontre-t-il pas plus de succès ? Plus que les doutes sur la qualité du dépistage organisé ou la peur de la maladie, la polémique autour du surdiagnostic des cancers du sein et de l'absence de bénéfices en termes de mortalité a pu constituer un obstacle à une évolution plus favorable du dispositif. En effet, ce débat international conduit par de nombreux experts tend à remettre en cause l'existence même de ce dépistage. Malgré tout, si l'intérêt collectif nécessite encore d'être étudié, chaque femme peut voir dans le dépistage organisé l'éventualité d'en être une des bénéficiaires, celles dont le risque de décès dû au cancer du sein sera réduit notablement. Ce travail doit permettre aux pharmaciens d'officine d'être à même de répondre aux interrogations de la patiente concernant le dépistage organisé du cancer du sein
