This paper investigates to what extent and through which channels that health and educational attainment are interdependent. A dynamic model of schooling, work, health expenditure, and savings is developed. The structural framework explicitly models two existing hypotheses on the correlation between health and education. The estimation results strongly support the interdependence between health and education. In particular, the estimated model indicates that an individual's education, health expenditure, and previous health status all affect his health status. Moreover, the individual's health status affects his mortality rate, wage, home production, and academic success. On average, having been sick before age 21 decreases the individual's education by 1.4 years. Policy experiments indicate that a health expenditure subsidy would have a larger impact on educational attainment than a tuition subsidy.

This paper formulates and estimates a dynamic model of health, addiction, education, and wealth in order to understand the well-established positive empirical relationship between education and health. In our model, agents make decisions on schooling, consumption of addictive goods, and saving/borrowing over the lifecycle. Agents differ in their endowments of cognitive and noncognitive skills and initial health and face endogenously-determined borrowing constraints. The consumption of unhealthy addictive goods, joined with low levels of cognitive and noncognitive skills, and limited access to credit markets generate a constellation of bad health, and low levels of education and wealth, which is further reinforced by the complementary between education and health as individuals age. The model is estimated on data from National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 97, using a two-step estimation procedure that combines factor analysis and the simulated method of moments. Using the model, we quantify the causal relationship between education and health. We then conduct counterfactual policy experiments to assess (1) how excise tax policies on the consumption of addictive goods affect health, education, and wealth, and (2) how policies that improve endowments affect health, addiction, education, and wealth.

This paper develops and estimates a model with multiple schooling choices that identifies the causal effect of different levels of schooling on health, health-related behaviors, and labor market outcomes. We develop an approach that is a halfway house between a reduced form treatment effect model and a fully formulated dynamic discrete choice model. It is computationally tractable and identifies the causal effects of educational choices at different margins. We estimate distributions of responses to education and find evidence for substantial heterogeneity in unobserved variables on which agents make choices. The estimated treatment effects of education are decomposed into the direct benefits of attaining a given level of schooling and indirect benefits from the option to continue on to further schooling. Continuation values are an important component of our estimated treatment effects. While the estimated causal effects of education are substantial for most outcomes, we also estimate a quantitatively important effect of unobservables on outcomes. Both cognitive and socioemotional factors contribute to shaping educational choices and labor market and health outcomes. We improve on LATE by identifying the groups affected by variations in the instruments. We find benefits of cognition on most outcomes apart from its effect on schooling attainment. The benefits of socioemotional skills on outcomes beyond their effects on schooling attainment are less precisely estimated.
