Book Description
One aim of 'Healthy Start: a national strategy for parents with learning difficulties' is to expand the knowledge base about parents with intellectual disability and their children. This technical paper investigates the number, characteristics, and living arrangements of parents with intellectual disability in the Australian population, based on analyses of data from the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers (SDAC 2009) and the General Social Survey (GSS 2010). The paper estimates that 0.41% of Australian parents have an intellectual disability. Compared to other parents without disabilities and parents with other disabilities, parents with an intellectual disability are significantly disadvantaged in employment, income, housing, social relationships, and health and wellbeing. An additional study will investigate what can be learned about these parents from social security and service administrative data.
