Sources of information are for example annual reports, earnings announcements and press releases. In the past, financial accounting research focused primarily on the numerical financial information disclosed (cf. Hales et al. 2011, 224).1 Interestingly, research showed that asset price movements could only partly be explained by this quantitative information and thus must have additional influencing factors (cf. Demers/Vega 2010, 2). Since corporate disclosure generally consists only to a small fraction of qualitative data and dominantly of textual information (cf. Li 2011, 1)2, and since language is the natural medium through which people communicate, financial accounting research started to focus on the analysis of textual disclosure (cf. Hales et al. 2011, 224). Results of these studies show that different aspects of textual disclosure, like the tone (how information is written/expressed) or the readability can influence for example market prices or analyst behavior (e.g. Li 2010 or Tetlock/Saar-Tsechansky/Macskassy 2008). This paper focuses on research in the field of tone as important characteristic of corporate textual disclosure. Its aim is to provide an overview about the most recent approaches and about challenges that researchers face. The remainder of this paper proceeds as follows. In section 2 the importance of textual analysis and the information content of textual information are discussed. Furthermore this section provides an overview about different approaches to characterize textual disclosure and a tabular classification of the recent literature. Since this paper focuses on the tone of textual disclosure, different approaches to measure tone are discussed as well. In section 3 two recent studies are discussed and section 4 concludes with a summary of the main results of this paper and gives suggestions for future research.

My dissertation provides prescriptive solutions and managerial implications for three novel operational and strategic challenges faced by firms or platforms in online business. The first problem arises from the need to manage online customer opinions. Online review platforms such as Expedia.com and Tripadvisor.com allow firms to respond to customer complaints. However firms need to carefully decide when to respond to negative reviews. To unravel the underlying mechanics of the problem, I develop a stochastic differential equation model (SDE) that describes the evolution of review ratings over time for a given response strategy employed by the firm. This model is validated using data on online customer reviews and firm responses from two of the world’s largest online travel agents. My approach is not just predictive, but more importantly one that can be used in a prescriptive sense, namely, to prescribe a response strategy that controls review ratings in a desired manner. I operationalize the theoretical response strategy in the stochastic model to an operational prescription that a firm can implement and show the applicability of the approach for different business objectives, such as Mean control, Mean-Variance control, and Service-Level control. Finally, I demonstrate the flexibility of the SDE model by extending it to encompass multiple state variables. The second problem extends the idea of online reputation management to competitive settings. I consider a market consisting of competing firms that participate in a platform such as Expedia or Yelp. Each firm exerts effort to improve its ratings, but in doing so, also influences the mean market rating. The sales of a firm are influenced by its own ratings and the mean rating of the firms in the market. An equilibrium analysis of the mean market rating reveals several insights. A more heterogeneous market (one where the parameters of the firms are very different) leads to a lower mean market rating and higher total profit of the firms in the market. The results can inform platforms to target certain firms to join: Growing the middle of the market (firms with average ratings) is the best option considering the goals of the platform (increase total profit of the firms) and the other stakeholders, namely, incumbents and consumers. For firms, I find that a firm’s profit can increase from an adverse event (such as, a reduction in sales margin, or an increase in the cost of control) depending on how other firms in the market are affected by the event. The findings are particularly significant for platform owners who could benefit from growing the platform in a strategic manner. The third problem addresses a novel Financial Technology (Fintech) phenomenon in social trading. In social trading, less experienced investors (followers) are allowed to copy the trades of experts (traders) in real-time after paying a following fee. This raises the transparency revenue tension: a dilemma between the need to release trading information transparently versus the risk of followers free riding on such information. I demonstrate the tension using data from a leading social trading platform operating in the Foreign Exchange market. An optimization model is developed to maximize information transparency while respecting a money-at-risk constraint. The performances of three information release policies are compared. Finally, I optimize platform revenue using an optimal release policy.

The rapid advancements of digital technologies have fostered transformation of various online and offline environments, which in turn created opportunities and challenges on modern management and decision-making strategies. In this dissertation, I examine three areas that are subject to the impact of such transformation, using evidence-based inference and optimization approaches to gain insights and enhance decision-making quality. The first essay examines individual investors' learning in crowdfunded supply chain finance (SCF) markets under the unique presence of loan guarantors in the financing process. My estimation results confirm the existence of investor learning. In addition, I observe that this latent perception has different moderating effects on investor responses to listing attributes, such as interest rate and loan duration. Counterfactual simulations suggest that enabling investor learning from correlated investment experience can help mitigate adverse selection and improve overall market efficiency; for supply chain members, optimizing the structure of loan listings could accelerate investor learning, which in turn can help simulate fundraising performance as a desirable outcome of reputation building. The second essay investigates the effect of scarcity-Induced demand on the crowdfunding market. Using a hierarchical Bayesian framework, this essay empirically validates the positive effect of the scarcity strategy in the crowdfunding market; Interestingly, my mechanism analysis reveals that individual backers are more susceptible to demand-induced scarcity: given the relative scarcity level, individuals are more attracted to invest in rewards that achieve this scarcity due to excess demand rather than limited supply. In my third essay, I use data-driven analytics to facilitate medical decision-making based on electronic medical records (EMRs). Specifically, I consider the problem of designing personalized treatment recommendations for patients with multiple myeloma, which is the second most common blood cancer in the United States. Using clinical data with patients' cytogenetics information, this essay formulates the treatment recommendation problem as a multilevel Bayesian contextual bandit, which sequentially selects treatments based on contextual information about patients and therapies, with the goal of maximizing overall survival outcomes. I also propose a causal offline evaluation framework which integrates the structural econometric model into bandit optimization and generates counterfactuals for policy evaluation. This novel framework provides reliable performance measures when field experiment or long log data are not available. Compared with clinical practices and benchmark strategies, my method suggests a rise in overall survival outcomes, with higher improvement for aging or high-risk patients with more complications.
