The ideological foundations of the contributors range from personalized neo-Marxism, through "extreme centre" neo-Keynesianism, to hard-line neoclassical mathematical economics. Despite this diversity there is a surprising degree of consensus. No contributor advocates centralized planning and none expects a free market to cure all economic ills. Opinions vary as to how well the market actually works, but all agree that equity and efficiency are essential goals which most consider to be complementary rather than mutually exclusive. In the concluding chapter it is suggested that current economic problems are caused not so much by government intervention as by the nature of that intervention. The authors believe that the recent ideological convergence may lead to a new paradigm, a theory of the optimal blend of market and management that will be flexible enough to deal with the varying conditions of diverse societies, thus simplifying the task of creating a smooth-running global economy. This dissertation consists of three essays on three topics in Development Economics: gender equality, state capacity, and human capital. The first essay studies the effect of female labour force participation on gender violence. Using Mexican administrative records for a 10-year period, the study examines the impact of local variation in female employment resulting from changes in US demand for Mexican manufacturing in light industries and finds that increases in the population share of employed women lead to reductions in the male-female earnings gap while increasing the female-instigated divorce rate on the grounds of domestic violence, consistent with an "empowerment"Â effect. However, the study also finds an increase in homicide of married women, consistent with a "backlash"Â effect. The second essay examines the effects of property tax rate changes on taxpayer behaviour in the context of weak enforcement capacity. Specifically, the study uses individual-level property tax records in Mexico City over five years and leverages variation from unexpected yearly tax rate hikes affecting only certain property value bands. The main finding of the study is that tax rate hikes lead to higher tax revenues but also provoke unambiguous reductions in tax compliance, worsening inequality in tax compliance. The third essay proposes a structural approach to study the general equilibrium effects of public investments in schooling on the labour market. Schooling decisions are modelled as individual choices subsidised by the government in an overlapping-generations model. Social returns of human capital depend on the productivity of different schooling levels as production inputs. Estimation of the model using Mexican data on schooling and earnings reveals that public subsidies to college increase average wages and reduce earnings inequality. The reason is that individuals experience significant productivity gains after completing this schooling level, while college graduates are relatively scarce in the Mexican economy.

Developing countries face numerous challenges that can impede their economic growth and development. These challenges manifest in several areas, including firms, governments, and households. Firms operating in these environments often encounter significant constraints, such as limited access to credit, poor contract enforcement, political instability, and inadequate infrastructure for transportation. For governments, resources are typically scarce, and information asymmetries can be high due to the prevalence of informal economies. Meanwhile, households often struggle to access quality education and healthcare, leading to lower levels of human capital. Taken together, these factors can significantly hinder opportunities for economic progress. This thesis focuses on three critical issues in developing countries, with a special emphasis on Mexico. The first chapter investigates the prevalence of small firms in Mexico's retail sector. It argues that high transport costs result in smaller effective market sizes, leading to the proliferation of smaller and lower-quality firms. In the second chapter, a framework is developed to guide the existing literature on social protection. It reviews and discusses the design and implementation of redistribution and income support programs in an environment with a large informal sector. Lastly, the third chapter examines the impact of expanding low-cost private healthcare access in Mexico. It finds a decrease in public healthcare usage but the results on which types of visits are being substituted away imply efficient sorting of patients and suggest that expanding low-cost alternatives can improve access and the allocation of care. By examining these issues, I aim to shed light on some of the challenges faced by firms, governments, and households in developing countries and discuss paths forward.

This book explores inclusive development in the Indian context, not only within each of the country’s major economic and social sectors, but also across countries in the particular context of globalization. In the emerging scenario of most expanding economies, including India, this topic remains particularly significant. The book’s sixteen chapters are divided into eight sections that address burning issues related to inclusive development – historical setting and policy context; current issues and future challenges; inclusiveness in the agricultural sector; inclusiveness in the industrial sector; inclusiveness in the health sector; inclusiveness and poverty; inclusiveness in the social context; and inclusiveness in the globalization context. The book highlights several positive developments displayed by the Indian economy in recent years, including the current growth rate of about 7 percent, which is among the highest rates around the globe.
