Book Description
Excerpt from Essays, and Sketches of Life and Character Than I had ever heard of: some few were in English; and one called, On the State of the Constitution, in a totally difierent hand. I suspect it was written by the gentleman, for there was only one, 'who used sometimes to pay my lodger a visit. With these papers in my hand, I 3went off directly to Mr. Longman; and he has given me some 'hopes that I may recover a part of my rent by their means. Who the author may be, I do not pre tend to say; or whether the last paper relates at all to himself: I leave that to the courteous reader; and I beg him to recollect, that I am not answerable for the opinions of a gentleman who has left his lodgings. Excerpt from Gavarni in London: Sketches of Life and Character; With Illustrative Essays by Popular Writers I thought you looked stupid, and as I have the box to myself, you are as well here as there. Stupid 1 Did the Marchionesses think so? We ventured to hint that it was a brilliant night. The grim and snuffy barrister looked positively sublime (soulie says that the manifestation of any passion, good or bad, in excess, is sublime) with contempt. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays Historical and Biographical No sooner had the news of my brother's death spread last November than several requests were made that a selection of his sermons should be published. One friend, however, suggested that, as he had in a pre eminent degree the gift of sketching character and setting it forth with its surroundings, a volume of sketches should be issued first. The following have been selected from among many more. From the time when he studied in Berlin under Neander till his latest days he cultivated this gift. He lived among the heroes of the past, and yet no man ever took a deeper interest in the men around him. Goethe said of Shakespeare's characters that they are like watches with transparent faces. You not only see the hands pointing to the dial, but you see the working of the machinery inside. Much of the same nature are the sketches in this volume. We have included sketches of reformers, of missionaries, of poets, and of cotemporaries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Ten Great and Good Men Lectures These very unpretentious Lectures are sketches and no more. They are in no sense Essays or Memoirs. They make no claim to be a serious contribution to literature. They do not profess to give a critical, much less a complete, estimate of the character, the achievement, the permanent influence of the great men of whom they severally treat. They have no fresh matter to disclose. They are based, in almost all cases, on facts that have long been known. And yet it is hoped that they may be in some ways serviceable, as stimulants at least, if not as very solid food. Their aim has been single, though not ambitious. It has been to bring before average hearers, intelligent but not learned, some notion of the personality of a great man, in the hope that they might be so far drawn to him as to wish to know him much more intimately. Book Description
Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of the most well-read and respected thinkers of his day, and he remains one of the most influential American thinkers of the last several centuries. This collection provides the modern reader with the opportunity to read, unedited and unrevised, some of Emerson's work. It is a collection that shines a light on his Transcendentalist beliefs and his passion for individualism. Lectures and Biographical Sketches: Volume Ten contains a total of eighteen works, five of which are biographical sketches and the other thirteen are essays on a range of topics. Stand out essays include Demonology, Character, Education, and The Scholar. The included biographical sketches are all quality, and focus on Ezra Ripley, Mary Emerson, Samuel Hoar, Henry David Thoreau, and Thomas Carlyle. Included in this collection are also several works that had never been published before, including The Man of Letters, Historic Notes of Life and Letters in New England, and several more. Lectures and Biographical Sketches is an excellent collection of works by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The book provides the reader with the opportunity to read some of the author's lesser-known essays, including some that were unpublished before this collection. If you are a fan or critic of Emerson, this book can be a valuable addition to your personal library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Essay, Mock-Essays and Character Sketches Reprinted From the Journal of Education: With Original Contributions by Lionel a Tollemache and Others As a volume of reprints seems to need some apology, the Editor may venture to explain its genesis. Prizes offered about a year ago for the best imitations of essays by Bacon and other standard English essayists produced such a number of excellent compositions that it was impossible to find room for several of high merit, and disappointed candidates were consoled by the promise that they should appear in a fourth volume of the series of Prize Translations. But on second thoughts it seemed doubtful whether a book consisting solely of prose parodies would be much appreciated except by the authors, and thus these Mock Essays have developed into Essays and Mock Essays, a mixture of seria ludo. With the material of twenty years to choose from, the task of selection has not been easy. The articles chosen may all be classed as educational in the widest sense of the word, but esoteric pedagogics have been eschewed, and nothing has been admitted but what is likely to appeal to lay as well as to professional readers.
