Epidemiology has served as the basic foundational knowledge to understand the distribution of COVID-19 on an international scale and the evolving nature of this pandemic within disparate communities. Epidemiological science evolved to strengthen our understanding of the determinants of COVID-19 to discern high-risk populations, along with knowledge of the long-term COVID-19 sequelae. We have witnessed the impact of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic measures to control a pandemic. We have built on our past knowledge from previous pandemics and developed new knowledge for potential future epidemics or future pandemics. Through this pandemic we have witnessed the intersection of health, healthcare systems, science, policy, and politics. Living during this pandemic has challenged the resilience of our public health system and scientific community, individuals on a personal level, and the fabric of our society. This pandemic has demonstrated that epidemiology is a core public health science critical to all aspects of human interaction and health care practice.
