Environmental Governance of the Baltic Sea
Author: Michael Gilek
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319270060
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
This edited volume presents a comprehensive and coherent interdisciplinary analysis of challenges and possibilities for sustainable governance of the Baltic Sea ecosystem by combining knowledge and approaches from natural and social sciences. Focusing on the Ecosystem Approach to Management (EAM) and associated multi-level, multi-sector and multi-actor challenges, the book provides up-to-date descriptions and analyses of environmental governance structures and processes at the macro-regional Baltic Sea level. Organised in two parts, Part 1 presents in-depth case studies of environmental governance practices and challenges linked to five key environmental problems - eutrophication, chemical pollution, overfishing, oil discharges and invasive species. Part 2 analyses and compares governance challenges and opportunities across the five case studies, focusing on governance structures and EAM implementation, knowledge integration and science support, as well as stakeholder communication and participation. Based on these cross-case comparisons, this book also draws a set of general conclusions on possible ways of improving the governance of the Baltic Sea by promoting what are identified as vital functions of environmental governance: coordination, integration, interdisciplinarity, precaution, deliberation, communication and adaptability.

Contemporary Environmentalism in the Baltic States
Author: David Galbreath
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317965906
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
This book examines the relationship between environmentalism and political transition in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Environmentalism was a strong force behind the nationalist movements preceding the independence of the Baltic States and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union. The contributors illustrate how the Baltic States face contemporary environmental challenges through transition, enlargement and integration into the European Union. This edited collection brings the reader through the political, economic and social changes of the post-Soviet Baltic States as a way of examining how transition influences environmentalism. Secondly, the book looks at how the enlargement of the European Union to encompass the Baltic States has influenced political and legal approaches to the environment. Finally, the contributors examine how regional and global environmental narratives have shaped contemporary environmentalism in the Baltic States. From ‘eco-nationalism’ to the world’s first ‘green’ prime minister, environmentalism continues to play an important role in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Baltic Studies.

Ports and the Environment
Author: Meifeng Luo
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317376749
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 129
Book Description
Ports are a vital part of the global economy, connecting the world through maritime transport networks, promoting international trade, and supporting global economic growth. However, port communities are increasingly concerned about the local environmental problems associated with air pollution from increased port activities. Efforts are increasingly being made into the reduction of human-induced changes to the global environment, and one of the target areas is to reduce air emissions from international shipping. It appears that management of the port sector has entered into a new era, not only because environmental concerns are increasingly being expressed surrounding the ports themselves, but also because many of the new environmental measures associated with the shipping trade have to be enforced when ships are in port. Ports and the Environment assembles research focusing on the management of ports, and the environmental issues associated with both the shipping trade and the ports themselves. By examining contemporary concerns from the perspectives of maritime policy, port management, and industrial efficiency, this book will be provide important reference for future research and policy-making in this area. This book was originally published as a special issue of Maritime Policy & Management.

Food Waste and Sustainable Food Waste Management in the Baltic Sea Region
Author: Walter Leal Filho
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319109065
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 231
Book Description
This work presents the findings of an extensive study on the state-of-the-art regarding the problem of food waste in Belarus, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. The results show that the problem of food waste can be found at different levels in each country and that our knowledge of it is limited by the current lack of studies in the area. The problem is primarily due to food waste generated by the manufacturing sector, mostly in the form of unused or inefficiently used by-products, as well as on a share of food thrown away by households that is still suitable for human consumption. The main reduction/prevention method, applied across the countries, is food donation; the remaining methods are the same ones used for biodegradable waste in the respective countries. The findings gathered in this study show a number of potential measures/methods for sustainable food waste management, which may be considered in future works in order to reduce the amounts of food waste generated in each of the aforementioned countries.

Waste Management for the Food Industries
Author: Ioannis S. Arvanitoyannis
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080554938
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1096
Book Description
The continuously increasing human population, has resulted in a huge demand for processed and packaged foods. As a result of this demand, large amounts of water, air, electricity and fuel are consumed on a daily basis for food processing, transportation and preservation purposes. Although not one of the most heavily polluting, the food industry does contribute to the increase in volume of waste produced as well as to the energy expended to do so. For the first time, nine separate food industry categories are thoroughly investigated in Waste Management for the Food Industries in an effort to help combat this already acute problem. The current state of environmental management systems is described, offering comparisons of global legislation rarely found in other resources. An extensive review of commercial equipment, including advantages and disadvantages per employed waste management technique, offers a unique perspective for any academic, student, professional, and/or consultant in the food, agriculture and environmental industries. - Thoroughly examines the most prevalent and most polluting industries such as Meat, Fish, Dairy, Olive Oil, Juice and Wine industries - Includes synoptical tables [methods employed, physicochemical or microbiological parameters altered after treatment etc] and comparative figures of the effectiveness of various waste management methods - Contains nearly 2500 of the most up-to-date references available
