Book Description
The engineering barriers for the nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain include a double walled container and a detached drip shield. The material selected to construct the drip shield will be Titanium Grade 7 (Ti Gr 7 or R52400). Ti Gr 7 is highly resistant to corrosion and consequently it is widely used to handle aggressive industrial environments. The model for the degradation of the engineering barriers includes three modes of corrosion, namely general corrosion, localized corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking (EAC). The objective of the current research was to characterize the susceptibility of three titanium alloys to EAC in several environmental conditions with varying solution composition, pH and temperature. The susceptibility to EAC was evaluated using constant deformation (deflection) U-bend specimens in both the non-welded and welded conditions. Results show that after more than five years exposure in the vapor and liquid phases of alkaline (pH {approx} 10) and acidic (pH {approx} 3) multi-ionic environments at 60 C and 90 C, most of the specimens were free from EAC. The only specimens that suffered EAC were welded Ti Gr 12 (R53400) exposed to liquid simulated concentrated water (SCW) at 90 C.

Book Description
The objective of this research is to define the conditions under which high strength beta-titanium alloys are resistant to environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) in marine environments. Our goals are to: (1) characterize environment enhanced subcritical crack propagation behavior for metallurgical, chemical and mechanical loading conditions that could destabilize crack tip passive films to promote local dissolution and hydrogen uptake, (2) test the hydrogen embrittlement mechanism for EAC, and (3) develop a mechanism- based predictive model of EAC by integrating occluded crack chemistry, surface repassivation, hydrogen uptake and segregation at trap sites, and crack tip process zone micromechanics and damage. The behavior of two peak aged beta alloys, Beta 21S (Ti-15Mo-2.7Nb-3AI by wt% and sigma sub ys = 1380 MPa) and Ti- 15-3 (Ti-15V-3Cr-3AI-3Sn; sigma sub ys = 1315 MPa) plate, was emphasized during this reporting period. Three papers were published; each is summarized as follows. Titanium alloys, Hydrogen embrittlement, Mechanical properties, Intergranular cracking, Transgranular cracking, Microstructure, Alpha precipitates, Beta phase, Hydrides, Passive film, Beta titanium alloys, Fracture threshold.

Book Description
The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. - Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC - Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels - Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace

Book Description
The role of hydrogen in the subcritical crack growth of titanium alloys is a subject of intense interest to those who use these alloys for structural applications. The most widely accepted theories are based on the absorption of hydrogen (in the case of environmental hydrogen-assisted cracking), its diffusion to regions of high tensile stress, and the initiation of microcracks at hydrides precipitated in such regions. One of the difficulties with such a mechanism is the paucity of observations of titanium hydrides on fracture surfaces, such as those caused by stress corrosion cracking or inert-environment sustained load cracking caused by residual hydrogen impurity. Another difficulty has been the identity in microstructural crack paths between stress corrosion cracking in hydrogen-containing (saltwater, etc.) and hydrogen-free (carbon tetrachloride) environments.
