Book Description
Excerpt from High School English Book One The chapter on Conversations about Books seeks to ih dicate a method for classroom discussions about the books prescribed for the work in literature. The authors believe that reading for pleasure is the chief aim of the literature work, and that the books should therefore be discussed from this point of view. They believe that the class dis eussions should be familiar conversations confined to topics of interest to young people. They would therefore leave the minute analysis of books for style and structure to the fourth high school year or to the college class. Such mi unties, if admitted at all, should be purely incidental. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from High School English, Vol. 1 Language began long ago when man still lived a rough and-ready life in the open, and was forced to struggle for his existence against great odds. At first his language was very crude and Simple, but it meant something to him and to his fellows. He made himself understood by its use, and he was able to under stand others. Soon he must have had sounds for hunger, for terror that came through the eyes and through the ears, for pain through touch, for bad smells and for good. Each of the five senses had its group of sounds that carried meaning to woman whether she served in her rude home or assisted the man abroad. And as together they fitted sounds to the feelings of smooth and rough, and foul and sweet, language began to develop, and man came to express himself more perfectly. Book Description
Excerpt from Literature in the High School In the face of these expert Opinions, it might seem, at first blush, presumptuous to discuss the matter of English at all, in connection with either high school or college. But not so. Even if literature cannot be taught, - and my experience inclines me to this opinion, - it certainly cannot be learned without the ability to read the written word. Moreover, the best literature cannot 'be read intelligently, and will not be-read at all by the majority, without proper introduction and guidance. In the matter of composition, certainly no man is regarded as fit for service in his community who cannot express his thoughts and desires in cor rect every-day English; and, though I say it that shouldn't, most college professors would be well satisfied with such ideal material! Even the last of the three apparent aspersions by no means eliminates the subject of English from discussion. For, even if the day ever comes when English is not required in the high school, it will always have a favorite place in the curri culum. Granted, then, that English shall continue to occupy a promi nent post in our educational institutions, it is eminently fitting that we should consider the relation between high school and col lege English. This question, strictly American, can best be answered in the truly American way, by asking several others: What are the principal aims in the teaching of English? With these ends in view, what should constitute the content of the course? How is this to be presented so as to bring about the desired results? As the college can but continue the work of the high school, I take, it that it will be sufficient to discuss these questions with special reference to the latter. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of High School English The teacher of English in the high schools of to-day has varied and manifold duties. To the lessons in literature and written composition, which were the staple diet a decade ago, there must now be added persistent instruction in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral composition, all duly planned and graded for the secondary school. Furthermore, every well-ordered course in English must include some provision for dramatic effort in the classroom if the work in oral expression is to be given its full value. The present volume contains material for study and practice in all these divisions of the subject, arranged with a view to affording the pupil as much growth-giving exercise as possible, and to economizing the time and energy of the teacher. The subject matter for composition, both oral and written, has been carefully chosen with the design of securing interest, for much experience has convinced the writer that the value of such work is in exact proportion to the zest with which it is carried on. Book Description
Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered. Book Description
Excerpt from The High School Course in English While the plan of the work has been made as flexible as possible in order to adapt it to different schools, it has seemed desirable to indicate definitely how all of the details of the course should be organized and what methods should be used to bring about the required results. The object has been to consider the purpose of each part of the English work, and to show as specifically as possible what must be done and to some extent how it must be done to accomplish this purpose. By having a' definite aim for each year's work and by seeing clearly what is to be accomplished in each part of the subject, the teacher of English feels responsible for the successful completion of a specific part of the course. At the same time the originality and ability of the teacher need not be ham pered by a definite plan but may be exercised in adapting the work to different conditions in different schools and classes. In discussing the course in English, the general aim and methods in teaching the important elements, composition and reading, are taken up first, and then the particular phases of each subject to be presented in each year, are considered. What is presented under the general topics, reading and com position, therefore, applies to the work of each year unless otherwise stated, and usually is not repeated in considering {each year of the course. Book Description
Excerpt from Recommended English Readings for High Schools The purpose of this book is to provide for each half year in the four years of the high school course a list of books adapted to the age of the pupils and so grouped as to suggest a special interest every term. Conditions vary so widely, that teachers will often wish to direct their pupils in one term to the groups suggested for another term. No book can take the place of per sonal contact between teacher and pupil. It has seemed, how ever, in the main, that much time could be saved for busy teachers by providing for every pupil an outline such as this. Dictation of lists is a waste of class time; copying posted lists is a waste of pupils' time outside of class. Questions will naturally arise as to the reason for choosing certain groups for certain terms. While the arrangement is not intended to be hard and fast, and the Index will make it easy for the teacher to select groups in whatever order he desires, there have been definite purposes in view.
