Book Description
Excerpt from English Historical Plays, Vol. 1 of 2 Marlowe's Edward II. Is given almost unabridged. The author's own melodious song of the Passionate Shepherd has been introduced, in order to eke out a somewhat meagre scene. Shakespeare's Henry IV. Is now presented as one long play in five acts. The three parts of Henry VI. Have been te-cast, the first play now ending with Margaret's marriage, the second with the death of York, and the third with the murder of Margaret's son. Edward IV. Is condensed from two plays by Heywood. Its delightful comic scenes serve to break the monotone of death-cries heard through the reigns of Henry VI. And Richard III. The play of Henry VIII ends with Queen Katharine's death, its true dramatic climax. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Book Description
Excerpt from Henry VIII. And His Court, Vol. 1 of 2: Or, Catherine Parr; An Historical Novel Merrily chimed the bells of all the steeples of London, announcing to the people the commencement of that holy ceremony which sacredly bound Catharine Parr to the king as his sixth wife. The people, ever fond of novelty and show, crowded through the streets toward the royal palace to catch a sight of Catharine, when she appeared at her husband's side upon the balcony, to show herself to the English people as their queen, and to receive their homage in return. Book Description
Excerpt from Ben Jonson's Plays, Vol. 1 of 2 The greatest of English dramatists except Shakespeare, the first literary dictator and poet-laureate, a writer of verse, prose, satire, and criticism who most potently of all the men of his time affected the subsequent course of English letters: such was Ben Jonson, and as such his strong personality as sumes an interest to us almost unparalleled, at least in his age. Ben Jonson came of the stock that was centuries after to give to the world Thomas Carlyle; for Jonson's grandfather was of Annandale, over the Solway, whence he migrated to England. Jonson's father lost his estate under Queen Mary, having been cast into prison and forfeited. He entered the church, but died a month before his illustrious son was born, leaving his widow and child in poverty. Jonson's birthplace was Westminster, and the time of his birth early in 1573. He was thus nearly ten years Shakespeare's junior, and less well off, if a tri e better born. But Jonson did not profit even by this slight advantage. His mother married beneath her, a wright or bricklayer, and Jonson was for a time apprenticed to the trade. As a youth he attracted the attention of the famous antiquary, William Camden, then usher at Westminster School, and there the poet laid the solid foundations of his classical learning. Jonson always held Camden in veneration, acknowledging that to him he owed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Biographical Chronicle of the English Drama, 1559-1642, Vol. 1 of 2 This book in outward form closely resembles the Biographia Dramatica of 1764, 1782, and 1812, founded on Langbaine's Dramatic Poets of 1691, which contains all that is of any value in J. O. Halliwell's Dictionary of Old English Plays, 1860, a mere scissors-and-paste compilation, with a few additions, but inaccurate and void of all historical grasp of the subject. Langbaine's book was excellent for its date, and the successive labours of Baker, Reed, and Jones, the editors of the Biographia, had considerable value; but Halliwell, by ignoring all notice of the biographies of dramatic authors, deprived their work of its principal recommendation to notice as a guide to the student. Yet his book has hitherto been accepted as our chief work of reference on this important subject it is a misleading and careless one in every way.
