This book offers a fine-grained analysis of the most common ingressive and egressive verbs in present-day English in terms of the semantic-pragmatic and cognitive factors responsible for their various structural representations. It draws upon the fundamental assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics, according to which grammar is symbolic and conceptually motivated, and focuses in particular on the ability of these predicates to be integrated into constructions as a result of metonymic and metaphoric processes, which impose a well-defined set of constraints. The book supports its analysis and findings with examples both taken from three of the major corpora of English, namely BNC, COCA and GloWbe, and retrieved through ad hoc Internet searches. Although the literature on English aspectual verbs is vast, there are no studies of the language-external factors responsible for their different configurations. As such, this book fills this gap by offering linguists and students of linguistics a detailed investigation of this topic. It will also be of value to scholars with a more general interest in the linguistic evidence of cognitive activity in meaning construction.

The present volume collects novel approaches to two classical topics within verbal semantics, namely argument structure and the treatment of time and aspect. The linguistic material covered comes from a broad spectrum of languages including English, German, Danish, Ukrainian, and Australian aboriginal languages; and methods from both cognitive and formal semantics are applied in the analyses presented here. This book offers a new account of the transitive particle verb construction in English. The main emphasis is on the alternation between the two word orders possible in English (continuous: hand in the manuscript vs. discontinuous: hand the manuscript in). The central aim is to show that the choice of the word order is not optional as has often been claimed in related literature on the topic and that a syntactic analysis should thus not be based on optional movement operations or optional feature selection. The author argues in some detail that the choice of the word order is determined to a great extent by the information structuring of the context in which the relevant construction is embedded. The syntactic structure she develops is based on a substantial combination of empirical facts, evidence from theoretical research and the results of two experimental studies on the intonation patterns of the construction.
